09/14/2017 AT RISK MEMO
Brooklyn A1123536 is at risk for a New Hope Only behavior determination. While his previous owner describes a friendly and outgoing dog, we have seen signs of a low threshold for arousal and potential object guarding behavior in the care center. For these reasons we are recommending placement with a New Hope partner at this time, who can further investigate these behaviors before placement into a permanent home.

Behavior toward cats: Unknown Resource guarding: None reported Bite history: None reported Housetrained: Yes Energy level/descriptors: The owner describes Brooklyn as friendly and playful with a high activity level. Other notes: SAFER ASSESSMENT: 9/14/17 Look:2. Dog pulls out of Assessor’s hands each time without settling during three repetitions. Sensitivity:1. Dog stands still and accepts the touch, his eyes are averted, and his tail is in neutral position with relaxed body posture. Dog’s mouth is likely closed for at least a portion of the assessment item. Tag:3. Dog becomes easily aroused with tense body posture and attempts to jump on the assessor. Squeeze 1:3. Dog turn quickly towards touch while pulling away. Squeeze 1&2:3. Dog head flips while moving away. Toy: 1.5. Dog growls and snaps at the asses-a-hand. Summary: Brooklyn was easily aroused during the tag item, and for toy item he growled and snapped. PLAYGROUP: When off leash at the Care Center, Brooklyn greets the female helper dog with a neutral posture but becomes sexually motivated and will attempt to mount. He is able to engage in cooperative bouncy play with a female but still becomes easily aroused. Brooklyn’s previous guardian reported that he is very friendly and approaches dogs with a wiggly body and wagging tail. The Behavior Department recommends that Brooklyn be placed in a home with resident dogs that are tolerant of his sexually motivated behavior and match his high energy. INTAKE BEHAVIOR 9/11/17: Upon intake Brooklyn was very energetic and wiggly, he allowed all handling. MEDICAL BEHAVIOR: 9/11/17: During his medical examination, Brooklyn was very friendly and allowed all handling.
ENERGY LEVEL: His previous owner reports a high activity level, which matches what we have seen in the care center. RECOMMENDATIONS: New Hope Only _X_No children (under 13) _X_Place with a New Hope partner- Due to noted concerns displayed in the shelter environment, the behavior department recommends Brooklyn be placed with a New Hope partner at this time. A period of decompression is recommended to allow Brooklyn to acclimate comfortably to his new environment; force-free, reward based training only is advised when introducing Brooklyn to new and unfamiliar situations. Consultation with a professional trainer/behaviorist is highly recommended for guidance to safely manage/modify any behavior Brooklyn presents with outside of the care centers. Potential challenges: _X_Resource guarding- Brooklyn was observed to growl and snap over the toy resource during the in-shelter assessment. It is important to leave Brooklyn alone while he is playing and never to take anything directly from his mouth. When he is asked to drop something, he should be traded for an item of equal or higher value, in order to reward Brooklyn for relinquishing the item he has. _X_Anxiety- Brooklyn has shown some signs of potential anxiety in the care center, vocalizing (whining, panting and also salivates) continually through the SAFER. This behavior was not reported at intake, the owner profile does not note anxiety so we cannot be certain whether this behavior will continue in a future home, or whether it is specific to the shelter environment. _X_Strength/leash pulling- Brooklyn is a large, strong dog with the capability to pull over an average adopter. His adopter must be prepared and able to handle a dog of this size and strength. It is recommended that he be walked on a front clip harness or head halter, which helps diminish his strength through leverage, and that he be trained using positive reinforcement, reward based training to not pull on leash.
