08/20/2017 PET PROFILE MEMO
08/20/17 20:02 Brooklyn is a large white and brown brindle dog. He came to the center as a stray. During intake, he was very loose bodied and greeted counselor with a big smile and tried to jump up. He was very curious when counselor tried to scan him and posed for the camera.
08/27/2017 WEB MEMO
A volunteer writes: Brooklyn is a puppy at heart– he’s very interested in every dog and person we pass, has lots of favorite people around the shelter (jumping up and giving kisses to the ones he loves the most), and has a constantly wagging tail. He pulls on the leash when he’s excited but otherwise does quite well with a harness. Brooklyn seems housetrained and knows how to sit for treats– in fact, he’s very treat motivated and would likely be very responsive to training using treats and positive reinforcement. Brooklyn comes when he’s called and loves to snuggle, and is looking for an experienced adopter to give him the exercise and structure he needs. Please come and meet him at the Brooklyn ACC today!
08/22/2017 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – EXPERIENCE
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
KNOWN HISTORY: None 8/20/17 Unaltered male, stray SAFER ASSESSMENT: 8/22/17 Look: 1. Dog holds gaze with soft eyes, soft body. He allows head to be held loosely in Assessor’s cupped hands. Dog holds gaze for three full seconds. Sensitivity: 1. Dog stands still and accepts the touch, his eyes are averted, and his tail is in neutral position with relaxed body posture. Dog’s mouth is closed for at least a portion of the assessment item. Tag: 1. Dog assumes play position and joins the game. Or dog indicates play with huffing, soft ‘popping’ of the body, etc. Squeeze 1: 1. Dog does not respond at all for three seconds. His eyes are averted and his ears are relaxed. Squeeze 2:1. Dog gently pulls back his paw. Toy 1: No interest. Summary: Brooklyn was a bit anxious with a high energy throughout the assessment. He allowed all handling. PLAYGROUP: When off leash with dogs at the Care Center Brooklyn is sexually motivated and mounts the other dogs, ignoring both corrections and interruptions from handlers. Brooklyn came into the Care Center as a stray so his previous behavior around other dogs is unknown. The Behavior Department recommends that Brooklyn be placed in a home with resident dogs that are extremely tolerant of his sexually motivated behavior. All introductions should be done slowly and under supervision. INTAKE BEHAVIOR 8/20/17 During intake, Brooklyn was very loose bodied and greeted counselor with a big smile and tried to jump up. He was very curious when counselor tried to scan him and posed for the camera. ENERGY LEVEL: We have no history on Brooklyn so we cannot be certain of his behavior in a home environment. Brooklyn displayed high energy and movement throughout assessment. Brooklyn will need daily mental and physical activity to keep him engaged and exercised.
RECOMMENDATIONS: Experience (suitable for an adopter with some previous dog experience) Potential challenges: _X_Anxiety: Brooklyn has shown some signs of potential anxiety in the care center, vocalizing (whining) continually through the SAFER and through play sessions outside. This behavior was not reported at intake, and we have no known history on Brooklyn, so we cannot be certain whether similar behavior will be seen in a future home environment. _X_Strength/leash pulling: Brooklyn is a large, strong dog with the capability to pull over an average adopter. His adopter must be prepared and able to handle a dog of this size and strength. It is recommended that he be walked on a front clip harness or head halter, which help diminish his strength through leverage, and that he be trained using positive reinforcement, reward based training to not pull on leash.
08/21/2017 GROUP BEHAVIOR EVALUATION
Exam Type GROUP BEHAVIOR
When off leash with dogs at the Care Center Brooklyn is sexually motivated and mounts the other dogs, ignoring both corrections and interruptions from handlers. 8/23: Brooklyn immediately rushes a novel female dog and attempts to mount her. He is persistent despite her corrections and interruptions from the handlers. They are separated. 8/24: Brooklyn is hyper-motivated, and easily becomes frustrated when his leash is held while he is greeting a novel male dog. He is persistent with his greet, and ignores the other dog’s display of uncomfortability.
