09/13/2016 WEB MEMO
A volunteer writes: She has CRINKLES! OK, I made up the word, but it fits. Her forehead is adorably wrinkly like she’s pondering some in depth question, like, ‘why is the sky blue?, why do they say it’s raining ‘cats and dogs’?, why doesn’t everyone carry great treats for me?, why can’t I have a new home right now? when’s the next episode of Pit Bulls and Parolees?’ Brooklyn is good on the leash, seems to be housetrained, sits when asked (takes a little coaxing to get the hang of it, but she’s a fast study (must be those crinkles) and learns quickly). In the park, she’s convinced the birds and squirrels are there for her amusement, enticing a chase which they know they’ll win! She poses for photos like a model, and when she breaks into an ear to ear grin, her whole face lights up, and I want to break into song…”when you’re smiling, when you’re smiling, the whole world smiles with you…” A bit shy at first, she warms up with time and a slow approach. She responds to kindness as we all do, and an adult-only home where she can take her time acclimating to her new surroundings is ideal. She’s ready to meet you, are you ready for her?
09/12/2016 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – EXPNOCHILD
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
Brooklyn came into our center after being found tied outside so behaviors in the home are unknown. She was nervous upon intake and during her initial medical exam, but allowed handling. She averted her eyes for Look, body a bit tense. During Sensitivity she was a tense, lip licking. She followed slowly for Tag, crouching at each pass. She did not pull back her paw on either Squeeze attempt. She displayed minimal interest in the Toy, sniffing it. The Behavior Team recommends that Brooklyn be placed in an experienced adult home only due to fearful behavior towards novel stimuli. Force-free, reward based training is advised when introducing or exposing Broooklyn to new and unfamiliar situations. Look: 2. Dog’s eyes are averted. Her body posture is stiff and fearful; her tail is low and not moving. She allows head to be held loosely in Assessor’s cupped hands. Sensitivity: 2. Dog stands still and accepts the touch, her eyes are averted, her tail is between her legs, body stiff, mouth closed, lip long, ears likely back, may lip lick. Tag: 2. Dog is fearful but unresponsive when touched. Approaches the Assessor when the game ends. Dog is likely crouching, may have long lip or lip lick. Squeeze 1/2: 1. Dog does not respond at all for three seconds. Her eyes are averted and her ears are relaxed or back. Toy 1. Minimal interest. Dog may smell or lick toy, then turn away.
09/14/2016 GROUP BEHAVIOR EVALUATION
Exam Type GROUP BEHAVIOR
09/14/16: When introduced off leash to another dog in the care center, Brooklyn allows brief sniffing, then begins to offer correction for repeated approach. Brooklyn arrived into our care as a stray, so there is no available history of previous interaction with other dogs. The behavior team feels that Brooklyn would be most comfortable as the only resident dog in a new home, before following up on her behavior around them outside the care center environment.
