A volunteer writes: “L’amour a ses raisons que la raison ne connait pas” or “Love has a mind of its own.” I really fell for Brook. He is one beautiful dog. Although gorgeous, tall and unbelievably attractive, Brook is quite thin and has a lot of weight to catch up with. He is as hungry as a bear, and while he does not appear to guard his food, Brook is very grabby with treats. I hope that in a house of plenty, he will learn proper table manners. Brook is a little pushy with the ladies in playgroups and does not accept a no for an answer. Another department where this handsome lad will have to polish his manners. That said, having spent quite a bit of time with Brook, he revealed a number of positive sides. He wags his tail non stop, sits beautifully on command, but preferably for food. He is a great walker, likely house trained. He does not appear prey-driven and respects other dogs met. He likes to be petted, comes on the lap and kisses. He gives paw, right or left, and poses his head on my knees for more bonding. Brook is really trying to be a well-mannered dog, a gentledog…but I think that he will only be able to achieve this goal in a safe, caring and loving home, treated like a beloved pet. I really love Brook. This magnificent dog has the potential to be an outstanding friend in experienced hands. Come and meet Brook at the Manhattan Care Center and make him yours.
10/23/2016 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – EXPERIENCE
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
KNOWN HISTORY: N/A Unaltered, Stray SAFER ASSESSMENT: 10/23/16 Look: 1. Dog’s eyes are averted, with tail wagging and ears back. He allows head to be held loosely in Assessor’s cupped hands. Sensitivity: 2. Dog displays high energy and movement, but it is directed toward getting closer to the Assessor. His body is soft, likely panting, may jump up between attempts to lick Assessor. Tag: 1. Dog assumes play position and joins the game. Jumps up on Assessor. Squeeze 1: 1. Dog does not respond at all for three seconds. Squeeze 2: 1. Dog gently pulls back his paw. Toy: 1. Dog settles close, keeps a firm grip and is loose and wiggly. He does not place his body between you and the toy. Summary: Brook displayed no concerns during his behavior assessment though has been observed to become mouthy at times and appears to lack basic manners/impulse control. PLAYGROUP: 10/22: When off leash with a spayed female Brook is sexually motivated. When correction is offered he continues to attempt to mount and begins growling. MEDICAL BEHAVIOR:10/19/16 During his initial medical exam Brook allowed handling. ENERGY LEVEL: RECOMMENDATIONS: Experience _X_No young children (under 5) Potential challenges: _X_Basic manners/Poor impulse control (It is recommended that default behaviors such as “Leave it”, “Sit/Stay”, “Down” are reinforced to substitute frustration and teach him to control his impulses instead of simply reacting; proper management is also advised. Force-free, reward based training is recommended.) _X_Mouthiness/Poor bite inhibition (Decreasing the force of the mouth as well as the frequency of mouthing, in this order is recommended by using force-free, reward based training as well to reinforce a soft appropriate mouth and redirect hard inappropriate mouthing onto toys.)
10/22/2016 GROUP BEHAVIOR EVALUATION
Exam Type GROUP BEHAVIOR
Brook has only been introduced to female dogs while in our care, so his behavior around male dogs have not been observed. Brook engages in brief bouts of play with female dogs. He appears to have the ultimate intent to mount, however it should be taken into consideration that Brook is still unaltered. The behavior department recommends neutering Brook, and allowing slow introductions to other dogs in a future home. It is unknown how his behavior will translate into a home with dogs due to arriving as a stray. 10/22: When off leash with a spayed female Brook is sexually motivated. When correction is offered he continues to attempt to mount and begins growling. 10/25: Brook continues to display behaviors rooted in sexual motivated (Brook is unaltered). When the female helper dog solicits runnign play, he chases, then attempts to mount once caught up. 10/27: Brook greets female dogs politely, then otherwise roams away while keeping to himself. 10/29: Brook solicits a bit of play with intent to mount. 10/30: Brook engages briefly in play with female dogs.
