03/14/2017 WEB MEMO
A volunteer writes: Broly is a cute big mouse I wanted to become acquainted with for quite a while. We know very little about him except that he bit someone who seems to be inexperienced with dogs. Broly is often seen resting on his bed, quite peacefully, but comes right away to his door when called. He knows I will give him a treat and a scratch on his nose. He is a good walker, all wiggly, does his business on the way and will sit at once on command for turkey jerkies. He is extremely food-motivated and will comply with orders if there is a reward that he always really expects. He wags his tail a lot and even gives paw…he truly likes to be in company. Broly likes to be petted behind the ears and scratched on his butt. He is quite a likebable pooch but it is recommended that once adopted, he be seen by a trainer in order to make sure that he will be a happy match with his new and experienced owner. If you have the dog smarts, this handsome hunk is the one who will love you forever.

DOG-DOG INTERACTION ASSESSMENT: Summary PLAYGROUP: Summary MEDICAL BEHAVIOR: 2/25/17 ENERGY LEVEL: We have no history on Broly so we cannot be certain of his behavior in a home environment. However, he is a young, enthusiastic, social dog who will need daily mental and physical activity to keep him engaged and exercised. We recommend long-lasting chews, food puzzles, and hide-and-seek games, in additional to physical exercise, to positively direct his energy and enthusiasm. RECOMMENDATIONS: Experienced adopter, adult-only home _X_No children (under 13): Due to Broly’s bite history, the circumstances and severity of which are unknown, we feel that an adult-only home would be most beneficial at this time out of caution. Potential challenges: _X_Resource guarding (Potential resource guarding was noted on Broly’s assessment when he became stiff when in possession of the toy. For this reason we advise against ever removing items from Broly’s possession without safely trading for an item or greater or equal value. Guidance from a professional trainer/behaviorist is highly recommended to aid in safely managing/modifying this behavior in a new home environment.) _X_Fearful/potential for defensive aggression (Broly bit his owner in his previous home, the circumstances and severity of which are unknown. It is important to listen to any warning sign Broly may give that he is uncomfortable, such as becoming tense or growling, and to stop interacting with him immediately if these things occur. Positive reinforcement, reward based training is recommended with any issues that may arise with Broly.)
