Brody
Hello, my name is Brody. My animal id is #17716. I am a male tan dog at the Brooklyn Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 8 years old.
I came into the shelter as a stray on 06-Jan-2018.
Brody is at risk for behavior concerns (New Hope Only determination). Brody remains fearful in the care center. While he tolerates minimal handling, he makes all attempts to increase distance from the assessor when attempting to interact/engage.
My medical notes are…

[Spay/Neuter Waiver – Age] It is the policy of ACC not to perform surgery on any animal over the age of 8-10 years due to the higher risks incurred in a shelter setting. The veterinarian is hereby issuing a permanent spay/neuter waiver, from the spay/neuter requirements of the City of NY due to the estimated age of this animal. ACC does recommend you consult with your veterinarian to determine if surgical sterilization is appropriate.

Details on my behavior are…
Behavior Condition: 2. Blue
Date of intake:: 1/6/2018
Spay/Neuter status:: No
Means of surrender (length of time in previous home):: Stray
Date of assessment:: 1/10/2018
Summary:: Brody remains fearful in the care center. While he tolerates minimal handling, he makes all attempts to increase distance from the assessor when attempting to interact/engage. Out of concern for his stress level, a handling assessment will not be performed.
Summary (1):: Brody was surrender as a stray so his past behavior with other dogs is unknown. 1/11: When off leash at the Care Centers, Brody displays a soft and social body language. He is slightly sexually motivated, but does not attempt to mount the female helper dog. He explores the area and its smells, while frequently checking in with the other dog. He tolerates her flirtatious behavior- and constant body contact. 1/12: Today, when greeting a calm neuter male dog Brody is slightly uncomfortable displaying lip licking and a tucked tail. He persistently sniffs the other dogs rear, before moving away.
Date of intake:: 1/6/2018
Date of initial:: 1/6/2018
Summary:: Quiet, allowed handling
ENERGY LEVEL:: Brody remains fearful in the care center so we cannot appropriate assess energy level at this time.
BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:: NEW HOPE ONLY
Behavior Asilomar: TM – Treatable-Manageable
Recommendations:: Place with a New Hope partner
Recommendations comments:: Place with a New Hope partner: Brody has not acclimated well to the kennel environment and has allowed minimal handling since intake. We recommend placement with a New Hope partner who can provide any necessary behavior modification (force-free, positive reinforcement-based) and re-evaluate behavior in a stable home environment before placement into a permanent home.
Potential challenges: : Handling/touch sensitivity,Fearful
Potential challenges comments:: Handling sensitivity: Brody has displayed discomfort with touch in certain areas, specifically his paws at this time. It is important to avoid touching Brody’s paws at this time and being cautious when touching him in other areas as we do not know where he may have other sensitivities. Positive reinforcement, reward based training should be used to pair touch with good things such as food rewards in order to teach Dog to be more comfortable with this Fearful: Brody has shown high levels of fear in the care center in each interaction, though he manages his stress well and has not escalated to warning signs. He needs a very slow approach and the ability to warm up to new people and new environments at his own pace. Brody should be permitted to initiate interactions and solicit attention when he feels comfortable, rather than being forced to interact
