Brody
Hello, my name is Brody. My animal id is #17687. I am a male brown dog at the Manhattan Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 1 years old.
I came into the shelter as a owner surrender on 05-Jan-2018, with the surrender reason stated as person circumstance- landlord won’t allow.
Brody is at risk for behavioral reasons. Brody is very scared in the shelter environment, and he is becoming less, rather than more, comfortable. Brody is described by his previous owner as anxious, and due to his observed tendencies to avoid and to bark at new people and things, we recommend an adult only home would be best for Brody. Medically, we have no concerns for Brody, who presents as a healthy young dog.
My medical notes are…

Behavior Condition: 2. Blue
Upon intake, Brody would bark at a few people that walked into the lobby. I allowed the owner to collar Brody as he had been barking at strangers. When the owner approached me with Brody, Brody came up to me on his own and begin to sniff my feet and legs. Brody then jumped up to my legs and had a wagging tail and loose body and allowed me to pet him and place his face in between my hands. Brody allowed to crouch down next to him and continue petting him and allowed me to pick him up and place him into his kennel.

BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:: ADULT ONLY HOME
Behavior Asilomar: TM – Treatable-Manageable
Recommendations:: No children (under 13)
Recommendations comments:: No children: Due to how uncomfortable Brody is currently with touch and novel stimuli, as well as his history of barking at and avoiding new people, we feel that an adult-only home would be most beneficial at this time.
Potential challenges: : Fearful/potential for defensive aggression
Potential challenges comments:: Fearful/potential for defensive aggression: Brody is reported to bark at and stay away from strangers. In the care center, he has displayed fearful behavior. It is important to always go slow and give Brody the option to walk away from any social interaction. Brody should never be forced to approach anything that he is uncomfortable with or to submit to petting or handling. It should always be Brody’s choice to approach a new person or thing. Brody would do best in an initially calm and quiet home environment and should be given time to acclimate to his new surroundings.
