07/16/2016 WEB MEMO
A volunteer writes: You already know broccoli is good for you, but I’m here to tell you that Broccoli the dog could be the best thing that ever happens to you! He has the most ridiculous face (that mouth! those ears!) and the mushiest personality. He is super friendly, outgoing and playful. He seems housebroken and I think he knows basic commands including “sit” and “paw” (though he doesn’t respond consistently and eventually I just give him a treat for being him — I love him and he loves them!). He likes to play with toys and has been very gentlemanly in sharing them with me. When he needed a drink he knew right away to check the kiddie pool — clever boy! Broccoli’s most endearing habit, though, is how rarely he is on all four paws: this guy is the undisputed king of belly rubs. Nearly as soon as I start petting him (or try to get him to do “down”) he melts into a puddle. He’ll roll his head into my lap, bat his paws at me, and very lightly mouth my hands. I can’t get enough…he is the sweetest! Even the smallest serving of Broccoli will provide you with 150% of your daily joy: come meet him at Brooklyn ACC today!
07/15/2016 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – EXPERIENCE
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
Broccoli came into the care center as a stray, so we cannot speak to his behavior in his previous home. Broccoli has been social and easy to handle since intake. In the behavior room Broccoli was high-energy and mouthy (minimal pressure). He did not allow positioning for Look, but he was soft and wiggly, sometimes jumping on the assessor. He joined in the Tag game and grabbed the leash, but did not pull, did not escalate, and released the leash as soon as the game ended. He engaged with the toy, body soft and wiggly. Broccoli is an active young dog. He showed no aggression during the SAFER assessment but did demonstrate a fairly low threshold for arousal. He will need daily physical and mental exercise, guidance to learn how to greet and interact approrpriately, and guidance to learn appropriate outlets for his exuberance. He will likely do best with someone familiar with dog body language who can help him de-escalate before he gets overstimulated. We recommend an adopter with some dog experience. Look: 3. Dog jumps on the Assessor and will not allow Assessor to conduct the assessment. Sensitivity: 1. Dog stands still and accepts the touch, his eyes are averted, and his tail is in neutral position with relaxed body posture. Dog’s mouth is likely closed for at least a portion of the assessment item. Tag: 1. Dog indicates play with huffing, soft ‘popping’ of the body, etc. Dog might jump on Assessor once play begins. Squeeze 1/2: 1. Dog does not respond at all for three seconds. His eyes are averted and his ears are relaxed or back. Toy: 1. Dog settles close, keeps a firm grip and is loose and wiggly. He does not place his body between you and the toy. Dog-dog: When off leash with dogs at the Care Center, Broccoli greets the other dog displaying soft body language. He is a bit sexually motivated but does not attempt to mount. He listens to handler interruptions and is able to wander in the pen.
07/14/2016 GROUP BEHAVIOR EVALUATION
Exam Type GROUP BEHAVIOR
Broccoli was surrendered as a stray so his past behavior around other dogs is unknown. 7/14: When off leash with dogs at the Care Center, Broccoli greets the other dog displaying soft body language. He is a bit sexually motivated but does not attempt to mount. He listens to handler interruptions and is able to wander in the pen.
