01/14/2017 WEB MEMO
A volunteer writes: “WOOF! Notice me please!” That’s miss Brini’s first message for me as I’m walking past her kennel. But of course I’d noticed her straight away. Lovely Brini is difficult to miss. Her caramel and vanilla coat swirls together in perfect harmony, and her beautiful face is almost cartoonish-ly too big for her frame. “WOOF! WOOF! I’d like to go outside, please!” Naturally I oblige and off we go, Brini pulling a bit on leash, clearly with business on her mind. The moment she attends to it, she turns up at me with that adorably wrinkled brow. “WOOF! What’s next?” Next, it’s time for play and for fun, and both turn out to be Brini’s game. She follows me happily as I produce a beloved squeaky toy, and when I retire to a bench, hops up to join me at my side. “WOOF! Any treats, please??” Well, for a face like that, of course! And Brini hungrily munches each one from my palm, savoring every bite. Beautiful Brini has no trouble saying what she wants, and truly, why should she? She is delightful and sweet and fun and… “WOOF!” I look down at our girl now patiently staring up at me. And for once she needn’t say a thing. I know exactly what she wants: a home. Here’s hoping she finds it soon. Brini is waiting in adoptions at Manhattan’s ACC.
01/18/2017 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – EXPERIENCE
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
KNOWN HISTORY: N/A Unaltered, Stray Other notes: Brini was found tied to a fence with another large dog. He was social and interactive when first approached. SAFER ASSESSMENT: 1/13/2017 Look: 2. Dog’s eyes are averted, tail low wagging, head low Sensitivity: 2. Dog whines, leans into assessor’s hand, tail low wagging. Tag: 1. Follows at end of leash, body soft, whines at end of game. Squeeze 1 / 2: 1. Dog does not respond at all for three seconds. Her eyes are averted and her ears are relaxed Toy 1. Minimal interest. Dog smells and mouths once, then walks away. Summary: Brini whined throughout assessment, but allowed all handling. PLAYGROUP: During an on-leash greeting with a male helper dog, Brini barks and charges toward him while vocalizing. Another attempt is made to introduce her off leash to a different greeter dog. A muzzle is applied, and Brini again charges, growling and barking, with tense body language. She persistently charges each time the helper moves, then appears lose interest when the helper dog stops moving. MEDICAL BEHAVIOR: 1/11/17 During her initial medical examination, Brini was tense and nervous, backing away from touch, but she allowed all handling without issue. ENERGY LEVEL: IN-SHELTER OBSERVATIONS: When in the presence of other dogs Brini has exhibited a concerning level of arousal and is not easily de-escalated. When a handler attempts to remove her from a pen, Brini is tense and repeatedly jumps up grabbing the leash in her mouth. She continues to do this once the handler drops the leash and ends up grabbing the handlers breast pocket. With an additional handler she is led out of the pen with treats but eventually snaps at that person’s hands. The behavior department recommends exercising caution with Brini around other dogs until her behaviors can be followed up on outside of the care center.
