04/12/2017 WEB MEMO
A volunteer writes: I first met Cassandra while she was draped over the shoulder of another volunteer (looking like there was no place she’d rather be!) and that first impression of her seems to be pretty accurate…this little lady is a LOVER! She seems to have a fair amount of energy, but absolutely loves playing with toys (and does the most adorable head tilts when they squeak) and has also enjoyed playing with other dogs in our playgroups…perfect outlets to tucker her out! She pulls some on leash, seems housebroken, and eagerly sits for treats. She starts to feverishly wag her tail whenever we approach people on walks and thinks everyone deserves a hug and lots of kisses. She is super friendly, engaging, charming, playful, SO affectionate, cute as can be….and she could be yours!! Cassandra would love to meet you at Brooklyn ACC!

Summary: Brimmey displayed no concerning behaviors on her assessment and was social throughout. She jumped up on the assessor a few times in a social manner. DOG-DOG INTERACTION ASSESSMENT: Summary PLAYGROUP: Summary INTAKE BEHAVIOR Upon intake, Brimmey was excited. MEDICAL BEHAVIOR: 8/4/17 Dring her initial medical exam, Brimmey was active and allowed handling. ENERGY LEVEL: We have no history on Brimmey so we cannot be certain of his behavior in a home environment. However, she is a young, enthusiastic, social dog who will need daily mental and physical activity to keep her engaged and exercised. We recommend long-lasting chews, food puzzles, and hide-and-seek games, in additional to physical exercise, to positively direct her energy and enthusiasm.
RECOMMENDATIONS: New Hope Only _X_No children (under 13): Due to Brimmey’s bite history, we recommend an adult only home. _X_Place with a New Hope partner: Due to Brimmey’s bite history, we recommend placement with a New Hope partner who is able to provide an experienced adult-only foster home. A period of decompression is recommended to allow Brimmey to acclimate comfortably to her new environment; force-free, reward based training only is advised when introducing Brimmey to new and unfamiliar situations. Consultation with a professional trainer/behaviorist is highly recommended for guidance to safely manage/modify any behavior Brimmey presents with outside of the care centers. Potential challenges: _X_Bite history/risk of future aggression: In her previous home, Brimmey bit a person who was sitting on the couch, requiring six stitches. We do not know what triggered this bite. Brimmey needs careful behavior modification and management to prevent future bites. We recommend only force-free, reward-based training methods for Brimmey as more aversive techniques are likely to increase fear and increase the risk of aggression.
04/05/2017 GROUP BEHAVIOR EVALUATION
Exam Type GROUP BEHAVIOR
When off leash with dogs at the Care Center, Cassandra solicits and engages in gentle play with male and female dogs. She offers appropriate corrections when a male mounts her and continues to play. Cassandra was surrendered as a stray so her past behavior around dogs is unknown. The Behavior Department recommends that Cassandra be placed with dogs that match her gentle play style. 4/5: Cassandra displays neutral body language when greeting a novel male dog. Once in the pen, Cassandra displays loose and wiggly body language and solicits gentle play with paw slaps. She offers appropriate correction by head whipping when the male attempts to mount her and continues to play. 4/6-4/7: In a group of playful male and female dogs, Cassandra solicits and engages in gentle play. During Brimmey’s (Fka Cassandra) previous stay at the Care Center, it was reported that she engaged in gentle play, with paw slaps. Her previous owner reported she spent limited time with other dogs, and bark at them when she saw them. 8/4: When off leash at the Care Center, Brimmey displays a tall posture when introduced to a novel male dog. She closely bounces near the greeter, with a tense body, when he solicits gentle play. As the energy increases she becomes assertive and jumps on the other dog with an open mouth. She briefly listens to handler interruptions, before re-engaging in the behavior.
