09/20/2017 AT RISK MEMO
Breanna A1120863 is at risk with a New Hope Only determination due to mouthiness and lack of bite inhibition. Breanna’s mouthy behavior appears to be attention seeking though she does apply hard pressure when aroused which could escalate to a bite/broken skin if not managed carefully and appropriately.

08/23/17 16:28 Basic Information: Breanna is a 1 year & 6 month old female large breed dog that was being treated for CIRDC. Previous owner adopted Breanna 4 days ago from SIACC but can no longer have her because she is too mouthy during play and appears to have poor bite inhibition. Socialization: According to the previous owner, around strangers, Breanna is friendly and outgoing. With adults, Breanna plays in an exuberant and sometimes somewhat rough manner to the point of leaving bruises from being overly mouthy. Previous owners did not have any other pets so Breanna was not exposed to cats or other dogs so behavior around them is unknown. She has bitten the previous owner during play leaving bruising but not breaking skin. Behavior: Previous owners stated that Breanna doesn’t have any behavioral issues. Breanna isn’t bothered when any food, treat, or toy is taken from her or when she is pushed or pulled off furniture. For a New Family to Know: Breanna is described as friendly, affectionate, excitable, and playful with a very high activity level. 09/14/2017 WEB MEMO
A volunteer writes: Breanna is an exuberant pup…she can barely contain her excitement when I approach her kennel with my leash. Once out in the play yard, she zooms about gleefully, play bowing at everyone and everything she sees. She stops briefly for some kisses and cuddles, and is off again. Breanna is fun dog who would love an active family. If you fit that profile and want to meet Breanna, stop by our Care Center.
Another volunteer writes: I can’t put my finger on why I like Breanna so much, but I do! She’s got sort of an ornery personality, like she’s testing how much she can get away with, and at times she gets mouthy, especially when she gets excited. For some reason, she likes to mouth at my feet, almost as if they’re fun play things that spontaneously move around and she just can’t seem to help herself! She is able to entertain herself with toys, and gets adorable zoomies as she runs around the yard. When she’s ready, she brings me her toys, puts them in my lap and teases me by quickly taking them back—I should admire them just as much as she does, but they’re still hers! She knows the commands sit and lay down, and when she’s not fooling around, prefers to stretch out and relax on the bench. Breanna seems impeccably housetrained and she’s always eager to go out. She’s ready for someone who is going to give her plenty of exercise, a little more training and set those boundaries that she certainly needs! Ask to meet her today!

MEDICAL BEHAVIOR: 8/4/2017 During her initial medical exam, Breanna allowed all handling. ENERGY LEVEL: We have no history on Breanna so we cannot be certain of her behavior in a home environment. In the care center, Breanna displays as a young, social, and affectionate dog with a medium to high level of activity. She will need daily mental and physical activity to keep her engaged and exercised. We recommend daily walks, runs, exercise, and play.
RECOMMENDATIONS: New Hope Only _X_No young children (under 13): Breanna has displayed hard mouthing in her previous home and in-shelter when she becomes excited and has bruised on occasion; for these reasons, we recommend a home without children at this time. _X_Place with a New Hope partner: Due to Breanna’s low threshold for arousal in addition to her poor bite inhibition, we recommend placing her with a New Hope partner who can provide her with necessary behavior modification to address these concerns. Potential challenges: _X_Basic manners/Poor impulse control: It is recommended that default behaviors such as “Leave it”, “Sit/Stay”, “Down” are reinforced to substitute any frustration and teach Breanna to control her impulses instead of simply reacting; proper management is also advised. Force-free, reward based training only is recommended. Mouthiness/poor bite inhibition: According to her previous owner, Breanna hard mouths at times to the point where she has left bruises. This appears to be an attention-seeking, excitement induced, behavior, but it should be replaced with an alternative behavior as it can frighten people. We recommend never playing with bare hands – always with a toy – and ending play or attention whenever Breanna puts teeth on skin. She should be rewarded with attention and treats when she stops and/or when she is seeking attention in alternate ways.
08/10/2017 GROUP BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – AVERAGE
Exam Type GROUP BEHAVIOR
When greeting a social male through the gate, Breanna was growling but her body remained neutral. She was then introduced to the male while on leash, Breanna quicky approached, became tense and began to growl. The session then ended. 8/16: Breanna was introduced to a small breed male dog, she was very polite when greeting him. She approached, sniffed and walked past him to do her business. She mostly explored the yard and briefly approached the male, body soft the whole time. 9/6: Breanna continues to display stiff / tense body language at the gate. Breanna was muzzled when greeting a female with the same reactive behaviors, muzzled as well. Breanna contiues to be stiff and often growled when the female approached her. She was less reactive with a male but kept her distance and was avoidant of the interaction; she mostly kept to herself, was focused on the muzzle and would seek exit. 9/20: Today, Breanna displayed a softy body at the gate when greeting a larger male. She avoids him most of the session, and explores the pens.
