10/22/2016 WEB MEMO
A volunteer writes: Should we disappear suddenly, please make sure to look for Brandon, because we are sure to be curled up in a corner somewhere playing “high five” with this gorgeous, brilliant, hilarious dog. This green-eyed beauty not only knows how to high five, but also how to do it ambidextrously–and constantly, whenever asked, just to amuse (and it is unbelievably amusing). Brandon’s an all-around heart-melter and people-pleaser, warm and kind and playful with an extraordinary demeanor. When he arrived at the shelter as a stray, far from acting stressed, he proceeded to play ball during intake and exam. Give him a squeaky toy and it’s like you’ve sent him on an all-expenses paid trip to dog Nirvana. Brandon’s needs are low but oh, how giant are the rewards of being with him! Please, come and give our guy a high five, and then high tail it home together!
10/23/2016 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – EXPERIENCE
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
KNOWN HISTORY: N/A Unaltered, Stray SAFER ASSESSMENT: 10/23/16 Look: 1. Dog leans forward or jumps up to lick the Assessor’s face with tail wagging, ears back and eyes averted, mouths assessor’s hand. Sensitivity: 2. Dog displays high energy and movement, but it is directed toward getting closer to the Assessor. His body is soft, likely panting, may jump up between attempts to lick Assessor. Tag: 2. Dog is not fearful, but is unresponsive to the Assessor, and approaches the Assessor at the end of the game. He is focused on stimuli other than the Assessor. Squeeze 1: 2. Dog gently places his open mouth over the Assessor’s hand without applying pressure. Squeeze 2: 1. Dog does not respond at all for three seconds. Toy: 2. Dog takes toy away, keeps a firm hold. His body is between you and the toy, and he is loose and wiggly. No growling or stiffness. Summary: Brandon was somewhat mouthy and jumpy throughout the assessment, appears to lack impulse control and may benefit from daily mental/physical stimulation. DOG-DOG INTERACTION ASSESSMENT: Play Skill Novice: These dogs lack appropriate skills to engage in proper play. They may become stuck on one behavior; lack pauses or breaks in play and often ignores warning signs from other dogs to slow down. Play should end when the other dog in the didactic pair signals it is over. PLAYGROUP: Brandon is playful and exuberant with both male and female dogs. Brandon frequently attempts to mount other dogs when play slows down. Due to arriving as a stray, history around dogs is unknown. The behavior department feels that based on observation made in our care, Brandon would be most compatible with other social, playful dogs. MEDICAL BEHAVIOR: 10/19/16 During his initial medical exam Brandon allowed handling. ENERGY LEVEL: RECOMMENDATIONS: Experience Potential challenges: _X_Basic manners/Poor impulse control (It is recommended that default behaviors such as “Leave it”, “Sit/Stay”, “Down” are reinforced to substitute frustration and teach him to control his impulses instead of simply reacting; proper management is also advised. Force-free, reward based training is recommended.)
10/20/2016 GROUP BEHAVIOR EVALUATION
Exam Type GROUP BEHAVIOR
Brandon is playful and exuberant with both male and female dogs. Brandon frequently attempts to mount other dogs when play slows down. Due to arriving as a stray, history around dogs is unknown. The behavior department feels that based on observation made in our care, Brandon would be most compatible with other social, playful dogs. 10/20: When introduced off leash to other dogs in the care center, Brandon engages in exuberant play with males and females. 10/21: Brandon engages in rough play with males and females. He will mount other males but will otherwise run, chase and mouth the other dogs. 10/22: Brandon continues to engage in rough play with large and small dogs. 10/23-27: Brandon engages in rough, mouthy play. He attempts to mount female dogs when play slows down. At times, he mounts male dogs during play as well. Brandon at times continues to solicit from dogs despite being offered correction. 10/28-30: Brandon, without the presence of any male dogs, is more intent on mounting today. He will engage when solicited but when play stops he, again, mounts. 10/31: Brandon engages in very brief bouts of play. He wanders the yard and keeps to himself today.
