09/24/2016 WEB MEMO
A Volunteer Wrote: “OMG!!!!” This pretty much sums up the reaction when people meet this marshmallow of love. To begin, he will walk to the front of his kennel and try to insist you take his bone because he’s that generous and thinks you will love it as much as he does. With his eternally wagging tail and goofy grin, how could you say no and risk hurting his feelings? The only thing more fun is being with Brad in the park, where he revels in back scratches, tummy rubs, kisses, and any kind of affection he can squeeze out of you. Throw in a treat for him, which he takes so gently, and you will witness joy come alive. Brad, who appears housetrained, is lovely with the other dogs he passes in the park, and has a glorious temperament that makes him the perfect walking (and sitting!) companion. Our gorgeous boy is a bit down on his luck at the moment-his ears have been sloppily cropped, his eyes are runny-but we just know happiness awaits. For him, and definitely for you with him!
09/23/2016 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – EXPERIENCE
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
KNOWN HISTORY: Unknown [Unaltered, Stray] SAFER ASSESSMENT: [9-23-16] Look: 2. Dog pulls out of Assessor’s hands each time without settling during three repetitions. Sensitivity: 2. Dog repeatedly turns toward the Assessor’s hand, with loose body and open mouth, mouths the hand, but does not apply pressure. Tag: 2. Dog is not fearful, but is unresponsive to the Assessor, and approaches the Assessor at the end of the game (may need coaxing to approach.) He is focused on stimuli other than the Assessor. Squeeze 1: 1. Dog gently pulls back his paw. Lick hand Squeeze 2: 1. Dog does not respond at all for three seconds. Lick hand Toy: 2. Dog takes toy away, keeps a firm hold. His body is between you and the toy, and he is loose and wiggly. No growling or stiffness. Summary: Brad was a bit excited and mouthy(light) during some of the handling items, but he showed no red flag behaviors on the assessment. DOG-DOG INTERACTION ASSESSMENT: Selective: These types of dogs can succeed with certain other dogs, but may be more selective or picky. They may dislike certain ‘types’ of dogs or styles of dog play so they may require extra supervision when interacting with other dogs. PLAYGROUP: When off leash with a female dog Brad greets nicely then explores the pen for a bit. He eventually re-approaches the other dog, with relaxed body, and begins posturing to mount. He is first solicited with play but does not engage, then when correction is offered for his mounting he ceases. Brad arrived to the care center as a stray, so any in-home behaviors with other dogs are unknown. It has been observed that Brad may pull and growl at a male dog on the street, so exercising caution on walks is advised. The behavior department recommends allowing Brad time to acclimate to his new environment as well as following up on his on-leash behaviors before introducing him to any resident dogs. MEDICAL BEHAVIOR: [9-22-16] Allowed all handling, more interested in exploring than the handler. ENERGY LEVEL:
RECOMMENDATIONS: Experience (suitable for an adopter with some previous dog experience) _X_Recommend caution with dog parks: until more information is known about Brad’s behavior around Potential challenges: __Pulling on leash: to reach other dogs. We recommend counterconditioning and desensitization when on walks to address Brad’s underlying anxiety when other male dogs approach. This involves giving Brad high-value treats while he is at a distance from the other dog, until the other dog is out of sight, to teach Brad that other dogs approaching means treats for him.
