03/17/2016 WEB MEMO
A volunteer writes: Meet Boston – he doesn’t bark, he bahks :). Sorry, I couldn’t resist, and actually I haven’t heard him bark or bahk! He’s a gorgeous dog in a pristine white coat, waggy tail, smiling face and perfect weight for his size. He may be housetrained as he took care of his business the moment we were out the door, and then showed off decent leash manners as we head to the park. I tethered him for some photos and he immediately found a stick under his feet which became a toy – something to play with and gnaw on. He’s too funny! Boston sits when asked to, takes treats gently and I offered the stick to carry back with him which he did for a minute or two. On our way back to the building Boston made friends with a woman who wanted to meet him, wagging his tail in greeting. Off leash in the back yard he loved playing with toys or a ball whatever I made available to him, and we then played a rousing game of tug with a toy. I let him win!! Boston brought the toy up on the bench to snuggle with me, steal a kiss and then jumped down to play some more. In group as of this writing he seems more comfortable with females vs males, play bowing to the female helper dog. Boston is fun, friendly, handsome, an awesome subject for photographs, and ready to find a new person or family with whom to enjoy playtime and a good game of tug. Who’s the lucky person going to be? Be sure to meet him when you visit. To see video, please copy and paste the following link into your browser: http://www.youtube.com/watch?
03/17/2016 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – EXPERIENCE
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
3/17 update: Boston is tense and attempts to mount but does engage in some play when interacting off leash . When the female dog offers correction he growls but ceases with handler correction. The two continue to sniff the pen separately but when the female approaches again to sniff his face, Boston escalates growling and snapping, attempting to bite. He again ceases with handler correction and is then removed from the pen. Based on his behaviors in playgroup, the behavior department recommends that he can go to an experienced home. 3/16 SAFER: Boston pulls hard on leash. He was sociable toward the handler during the assessment – soft body. He was calm and relaxed during handling. Boston was distracted, focused on objects in the room rather than the handler during the tag test but at the end of the game when Boston approaches the assessor he grab at the leash with a soft body language and was not difficult to distract him. He took the toy away with a soft body language. Boston did not show any concern during the behavior assessment. Look: 2. Dog pulls out of Assessor’s hands each time without settling during three repetitions. Sensitivity: 1. Dog stands still and accepts the touch, his eyes are averted, and his tail is in neutral position with relaxed body posture. Dog’s mouth is likely closed for at least a portion of the assessment item. Tag: 2. Dog is not fearful, but is unresponsive to the Assessor, and approaches the Assessor at the end of the game (may need coaxing to approach.) He is focused on stimuli other than the Assessor. Squeeze 1: 1. Dog does not respond at all for three seconds. Squeeze 2: 1. Dog does not respond at all for three seconds. Toy: 1. Dog settles close, keeps a firm grip and is loose and wiggly. He does not place his body between you and the toy.

He becomes more persistant with mounting attempt with prolonged time in the yard, and does not slow down when offered correction. 3/17 update: Boston is tense and attempts to mount but does engage in some play. When the female dog offers correction he growls but ceases with handler correction. The two continue to sniff the pen separately but when the female approaches again to sniff his face, Boston escalates growling and snapping, attempting to bite. He again ceases with handler correction and is then removed from the pen.
