SAFE 09/23/17

Manhattan Center

My name is BOSS. My Animal ID # is A1125981.
I am a neutered male brown and white rhod ridgeback mix. The shelter thinks I am about 1 YEAR

I came in the shelter as a OWNER SUR on 09/19/2017 from NY 10458, owner surrender reason stated was LLORDPRIVA.

09/22/2017 AT RISK MEMO
Boss A1125981 is at risk with an experience determination. He allows handling with a slow, gentle approach but remains fearful of new people and is beginning to show some barrier reactivity when visited in the kennel by new people. In order to prevent rehearsal of these behaviors we recommend that he leave the kennel environment and move into a stable home quickly.

09/19/2017 PET PROFILE MEMO
09/19/17 14:32 Basic Information: Boss is a 1 year olf male, brown and white large breed dog. He was adopted from North Shore Animal League about a year ago but his owner’s cannot keep him due to their living situation. He last went to the vet a little over a year ago in May and has no known health problems or injuries. Socialization: Around strangers Boss is friendly and he’s been around children ages 9 and older. He is relaxed, playful and gentle with children. He never lived with other animals but is respectful around dogs and cats outside when going on walks. Behavior: He isn’t bothered when touching his food bowl, toys or any chew bones. He is a little afraid of the bath but once he’s in the tub he isn’t bothered. When someone approaches the home he will bark but then is friendly when he meets them. For a New Family to Know: Boss is playful, confident and friendly with a high activity level. He loves playing fetch with his balls, chew toys and loves stuffed toys. He is crate trained and does well in it for at least 6 hours. Boss knows sit, paw/shake, get out, get down and stop as a command. Off a leash when on a walk stays by your side. For exercise he would going running on a track or brisk walks with his owner. Behavior During Intake: When scanning him for a microchip he backed away but sniffed the scanner. He allowed petting but backed into a corner when collaring him. He was resistant on going on to the blue photo back drop. When placing him into the kennel he tightened his body but eventually allowed me to place him in carefully

09/22/2017 WEB MEMO
A volunteer writes: I was going to give up on Boss as I could not “extract” him from his kennel. He was an expert at avoiding the nose of my leash. He was so cute, though. I tried again and he …got caught…I am so glad i got to spend time with him.. Boss is very unusual looking, elegant although too thin(easy to fix..) , so well dressed in his cognac color coat and as exquisite as a delicate pencil drawing. He was not the same dog inside and outside his den. He went from fearful to outgoing and warm, happy to lean on me, being caressed and waging his tail big time. A nice smile even appeared on his face. He clearly preferred to stay around me than roaming the yard, He almost went for a rope and a ball and i have no doubt that in a day or two, he will want to play fetch just like his former owner said about him. He did well in playgroups with his peers. A good walker his is, doing his business without marking and nearing other dogs without any problem.Boss is with us as his family encountered some difficulties preventing them to care for a pet. He comes with stellar comments..Good with strangers, the children of the house, friendly to dogs met in the street, no handling issues, no separation anxiety, playful, affectionate ..all the good stuff we want to hear when we are about to adopt a new pet. Boss is one of a kind and a very good boy. Come and meet him soon at the Manhattan Care Center , spend time with him and make him your new for ever four legged best friend…  Boss cuddling to some staff!  Boss hanging with some k9 friends!

09/21/2017 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – EXPERIENCE
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
KNOWN HISTORY: Full Profile 9/19/17 Neutered, Owner Surrender (In previous home for one year) Previously lived with: Adults Behavior toward strangers: Friendly Behavior toward children: Relaxed, playful, and gentle Behavior toward dogs: Respectful Behavior toward cats: Respectful Resource guarding: None reported Bite history: None reported Housetrained: Not stated Energy level/descriptors: Boss is described as playful, confident, and friendly with a high activity level. SAFER ASSESSMENT: 9/21/17 Look: 1. Dog’s eyes are averted, with tail wagging and ears back. He allows head to be held loosely in Assessor’s cupped hands. Sensitivity: 1. Dog stands still and accepts the touch, his eyes are averted, and his tail is in neutral position with relaxed body posture. Dog’s mouth is closed. Tag: 1. Follows at end of leash, body soft. Squeeze 1/2: 2. Dog quickly pulls back his paw. Toy: 1. Minimal interest, dog sniffs toy. Summary: Boss displayed no concerning behaviors on his assessment. PLAYGROUP: Boss was initially cautious, but has opened up to approaching and greeting calm dogs in the care center. The previous owner of Boss describes him as “respectful” around dogs. The behavior department recommends slow introductions between Boss and respectful dogs. INTAKE BEHAVIOR Upon intake, Boss was tense and backed away. MEDICAL BEHAVIOR: 9/20/17 During his initial medical exam, Boss was tense but allowed slow handling. On a later exam, he growled and snapped. ENERGY LEVEL: Boss’ previous owner described him as having a high level of activity. He is a young, enthusiastic dog who will need daily mental and physical activity to keep him engaged and exercised. We recommend long-lasting chews, food puzzles, and hide-and-seek games, in additional to physical exercise, to positively direct his energy and enthusiasm.

RECOMMENDATIONS: Experience (suitable for an adopter with some previous dog experience, especially with behaviors outlined below) _X_No young children (under 5): Boss requires a slow approach and time to warm up to new people. For this reason, we recommend a home without young children. Older, gentle children should have an in-depth interaction prior to adoption. Potential challenges: _X_Fearful/potential for defensive aggression: Boss has displayed some fearful behavior at the care center, and has growled and snapped during his medical exam. It is important to always go slow and give Boss the option to walk away from any social interaction. Boss should never be forced to approach anything that he is uncomfortable with or to submit to petting or handling. It should always be Boss’ choice to approach a new person or thing. Boss would do best in an initially calm and quiet home environment and should be given time to acclimate to his new surroundings.

09/21/2017 GROUP BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – EXPERIENCE
Exam Type GROUP BEHAVIOR
Boss was initially cautious, but has opened up to approaching and greeting calm dogs in the care center. The previous owner of Boss describes him as “respectful” around dogs. The behavior department recommends slow introductions between Boss and respectful dogs. 9/20: When introduced off leash to the female greeter dog, Boss is initially cautious but allows approach. 9/21: Boss is more interested in approaching and interacting with calm dogs. 9/22: Boss greets male and female dogs politely and wanders the pen.

They never got back to me. I am so sad for this dog. If I were in a better situation I would take him. I took 2 out of there so far. One since passed. I still have Stoney who is a spoiled senior pooch.

Are u sure someone called them ! I had to call one time and they said they would especially puppy!

    • Janet Cararo says

      September 23, 2017 at 15:09

Yes..You said it..A puppy they would take back. They do not take the older dogs/cats back..I know this as fact..You think I would make up such a story? They are not as caring as people think they are.. They are a glorified pet shop that mainly look for puppies and kittens all over the Country. I’m sure you have heard of Beth Stearn, Howards wife..Huge cat lover who works with NSAL.. She came to my local Shelter to rescue kittens, not one full grown cat..News flash….Ms Stearn..Kittens at my shelter don’t have a problem getting adopted, the full grown cats do. ..I have heard some no so nice things happening at that place..People complaining about staff being very rude.. Read YB comments., If they are still there.I looked them up a couple of years ago.. It will open your eyes
