Bosco
Hello, my name is Bosco. My animal id is #14333. I am a desexed male tan dog at the Manhattan Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 4 years 1 weeks old.
I came into the shelter as a stray on 21-Nov-2017.
Bosco is at risk for medical reasons, having been diagnosed with Canine Infectious Respiratory Disease Complex, which is contagious to other dogs. Behaviorally, Bosco has been assessed as being suitable for a dog experienced home.

A volunteer writes: Remember Bosco, that chocolate syrup your parents put in milk so that you would drink your milk? What a cute name for this cute pup, although he isn’t chocolatey in color. Bosco’s slogan (the syrup) is: “No matter how rich, no matter how far, there’s nothing that brings it back home richer than Bosco”. And Bosco, the dog, is ready to bring it back home, to you! “It” being love, friendship and joy. He’s compact, needs to gain some weight so we’re feeding him an extra meal daily, never stops wagging his tail, loves to lean against my hand as I pet him, has lovely leash manners, seems to be housetrained, and is learning to play with toys. He sits with some reminders, loves treats and takes them gently, and seems to just be learning what toys are all about, and finally played tug with me. He’s a smiler, our Bosco, and when he isn’t smiling, you can see the sweetest little pouty bottom lip that you’ll want to kiss. When our time together was over, he hopped right back in his kennel and settled down. Our adorable little guy is hoping you’ll ask to meet him today.

Hx: behavior team reported that he seemed sensitive on his left side around face S/O -BAR, very friendly and energetic -mm pk, moist -soft sneezing, excessive nasal discharge -small crusting wound over bridge of nose -visual OU -bilateral moderate to severe temporalis muscle atrophy, very pronounced occipital crest -ambulatory with no obvious ataxia but did cross hind limbs once when standing -withdrawal and proprioception WNL x 4 -mild discomfort on palpation of TL spine; gd ROM -BCS 4.5/9 A Temporalis m atrophy Mild TL discomfort CIRDC P move to isolation doxycycline 200 mg PO SID x 14 days cerenia 60 mg PO SID x 4 days Rimadyl 75 mg PO SID x 5 days prognosis: good; the cause of his bilateral temporalis muscle atrophy is unknown at this time; it often indicates neurologic disease but in this dog, it may be due to being underweight; it does not appear to be affecting his quality of life at this time and I feel that it is unlikely to progress

Bosco was stiff bodied when i approached him. He lunged at a young girl when she got close to him in the lobby and only allowed one of his finders to handle him for a short time.

Look:: 2. Dog pulls out of Assessor’s hands each time without settling during three repetitions.
Sensitivity:: 1. Dog leans into the Assessor, eyes soft or squinty, soft and loose body, open mouth.
Tag:: 2. Dog is not fearful, but is unresponsive when touched. Approaches the Assessor when the game ends (may need coaxing to approach). Dog is focused on stimuli other than the Assessor.
Paw squeeze 1:: 1. Dog does not respond at all for three seconds. Eyes are averted and ears are relaxed or back.
Paw squeeze 2:: 1. Dog does not respond at all for three seconds. Eyes are averted and ears are relaxed or back.
Toy:: 1. Dog settles close, keeps a firm grip and is loose and wiggly. Dog does not place his/her body between you and the toy.
Summary:: Bosco displayed wiggly high energy and movement throughout assessment, body always remained soft. At conclusion of assessment, he brushed his nose on handler’s pants, jumped back as if sensitive. It should be noted he has an injury on his muzzle that was there upon intake.
Summary (1):: 11/22: When introduced off leash to the female greeter dog, Bosco is a bit cautious, tense upon initial greeting. He softens a bit when sniffing and greeting on his own accord. When re approached, he lip licks and turns his head away.

ENERGY LEVEL:: We have no history on Bosco so we cannot be certain of his behavior in a home environment. In the care center, Bosco is wiggly with a medium to high level of energy. He will benefit from daily mental and physical activity to keep him engaged and exercised.
IN SHELTER OBSERVATIONS:: When Bosco initially arrived at the shelter, he displayed warning behaviors in shelter towards novel people (barking, distance increasing). However, once given time to acclimate, he displays more social behavior, seeking attention briefly and accepting treats gently.
BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:: EXPERIENCE (suitable for an adopter with some previous dog experience, especially with the behaviors outlined below)

Recommendations:: No young children (under 5)
Recommendations comments:: Due to growling at young girl in the lobby upon intake, we feel Bosco would do best in a home without very young children. Older, dog savvy children can be considered pending an in-depth interaction.
Potential challenges: : Handling/touch sensitivity
Potential challenges comments:: Bosco brushed his nose against handler’s pants, and jumped back as if in pain. He did not escalate beyond avoidant behaviors. Adopter should be cautious and avoid touching this area until it is further assessed medically. Bosco should never be forced to submit to petting or handling when he shows signs he is uncomfortable.
