08/01/2017 WEB MEMO
A volunteer writes: Boris is quite a catch…He is very medium size, compact, healthy, handsomely made and his perfect coat shows the most attractive fall colors markings. Who would not fall for his pointy ears that he sometimes keeps down making him look like a little chipmunk.. Boris is anxious to exit his kennel. He walks at a good pace, marks his territory and does a lot of sniffing around. He likes to be free in the yard and absolutely loves to play with a tennis ball. He will sit, all excited, waiting for me to throw the ball then runs, jumps and catches before to rest and chew his treasure. Playing relaxes him. It probably feels like home…His tail softens, wags and he comes for caresses and treats. Boris has been beautifully cared for . He is a young and good looking guy, energetic, still trying to situate himself in a world totally new to him, sociable, friendly and playful who would love to be someone’s forever friend.
08/04/2017 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – AVERAGE
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
KNOWN HISTORY: None 7/29/17 Unaltered Male, Stray SAFER ASSESSMENT: 8/1/17 Look: 1. Dog holds gaze with soft eyes, soft body. He allows head to be held loosely in Assessor’s cupped hands. Dog holds gaze for three full seconds. Sensitivity: 1. Dog stands still and accepts the touch, his eyes are averted, and his tail is in neutral position with relaxed body posture. Dog’s mouth is closed. Tag: 1. Follows at end of leash, body soft. Squeeze 1: 1. Dog gently pulls back his paw. Squeeze 2: 1. Dog gently pulls back his paw. Toy: 1. Minimal interest, dog sniffs toy. Summary: Boris displayed no concerning behaviors on his assessment. He was distracted during it, sniffing the assessor and the room. PLAYGROUP: 8/1: When introduced off leash to the male greeter dog, Boris follows and sniffs with a slightly tense body and high tail. He initially postures to mount, though when solicited with play, offers brief bounces. History around other dogs is unknown due to arriving as a stray. The behavior department recommends slow introductions between Boris and tolerant, well-socialized dogs. INTAKE BEHAVIOR Upon intake, Boris was friendly and attempted to mount people. MEDICAL BEHAVIOR: 7/29/17 During his initial medical exam, Boris was social and allowed handling. ENERGY LEVEL: We have no history on Boris so we cannot be certain of his behavior in a home environment. However, he is a young, enthusiastic, social dog who will need daily mental and physical activity to keep him engaged and exercised. We recommend long-lasting chews, food puzzles, and hide-and-seek games, in additional to physical exercise, to positively direct his energy and enthusiasm. RECOMMENDATIONS: Average (suitable for an adopter with an average amount of dog experience) Potential challenges: _X_Basic manners/impulse control: At the start of his stay, Boris was noted to mounted people and once mounting was reluctant to stop. He has at other times been calm during interactions, but it is possible that this mounting behavior may occur in a home environment. He may need positive reinforcement, force-free training to teach him to remain calm in the presence of excitement, by rewarding him with treats for calm behavior. He should be fed out of puzzle toys and Kongs to give him appropriate outlets to channel his energy. At any time that Boris begins to mount someone, people should walk away from him and into another room.
