02/27/2016 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – NH ONLY
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
Boomer became over aroused on walk grabbing the leash with his body stiff, and did not calm down easily. He was unable to be redirected with a toy or treats. Boomer redirect toward the handler the behavior team decided to place him back in his kennel he was difficult to handle. During playgroup when placing the drag leash onto Boomer’s collar, he immediately grabbed it and started biting up the leash. He became stiff, took the other end of the leash and began vigorously shaking; he was not distracted with toys or treats. He was placed into the first pen, and once calms, was introduced to another dog for playgroup. He was appropriate but once corrected; he lunged and snapped at a handler. He continued to stiffen and snap until the handler was able come out from the pen. He again grabbed the leash and began biting up it when being taken back inside. Boomer was surrender to us. According to his previous owner Boomer is energetic, playful, and affectionate. He lived with his owner for the past month. He lived in a home with adults but has interacted with children aged 7 and 8 years old. He becomes very playful when he interacts with children. He will jump up on them, lick their faces and allow them to pet him all over. Boomer is reported to show destructive behavior in the home, such as eat toilet paper. We suggest to future adopters that Boomer will need to be provided with physical and mental stimulation and with a variety of appropriate and engaging chew toys so Boomer can engage in necessary chewing behavior without damage to human objects. Due to the behavior demonstrated in the shelter the behavior department believes that Boomer is not an appropriate candidate for SAFER at this time. The behavior department feels that he would do best if placed with a New Hope partner who can follow up on this behavior in a more stable environment and can provide any necessary behavior modification before placement into a permanent home. Playgroup Notes: Boomer greets the helper dog politley at the gate but when introduced he is solely focused on one handler. When the helper dog approaches he growls and snaps at her and when offered handler correction he does the same, lunging and snapping toward the handler. His owner does not report on any interactions Boomer has had with other dogs, so any in-home behaviors are unknown. The behavior department recommends that Boomer does not go to a home with any other dogs until his behaviors can be followed up on.
