11/08/2016 WEB MEMO
A volunteer writes: Bonzai joined us with his housemate Babushka A1096076 when their owner passed away. He’s a handsome, friendly, tail wagging, “pleased to meet you” kind of a boy. Quiet in his arrival kennel all morning, when he gave me a couple of deep throated ‘woofs’ I knew he was telling me he needed out to go potty. Whew! He went and went and went….such a good boy for holding it and then letting me know it was time. Bonzai is a big boy, overfed slightly with love, and when we stopped to take some pictures Bonzai was the perfect model, sitting when asked, making soft eye contact and being very patient as I fumbled with my camera. Off leash Bonzai plays with a squeaky toy, shows me his ‘sit’ again for treats which he gently takes from my fingers, and rolled into me for a little cuddle time. He’s getting over so much, the loss of his person, being separated from his housemate, and adjusting to a totally new environment. He’s handling it so well, I’m impressed! The next change we’d love to see is him moving in with his new person or family and earning the title of ‘new best friend’. Ask to meet Bonzai when you visit.
11/08/2016 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – EXPERIENCE
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
KNOWN HISTORY: N/A Altered, Stray SAFER ASSESSMENT: 11/7/16 Look: 1. Dog leans forward or jumps up to lick the Assessor’s face with tail wagging, ears back and eyes averted. Sensitivity: 1. Dog leans into the Assessor, eyes soft or squinty, soft and loose body, open mouth. Tag: 1. Dog assumes play position and joins the game. Squeeze 1: 1. Dog does not respond at all for three seconds Squeeze 2: 1. Dog does not respond at all for three seconds Toy: 1. Minimal interest, dog takes toy but quickly loses interest. Summary: Bonzai displayed no behavioral concerns on his assessment. DOG-DOG INTERACTION ASSESSMENT: Selective: These dogs can succeed with certain other dogs, but may be more selective or picky. They may dislike certain ‘types’ of dogs or styles of dog play so they may require extra supervision when interacting with other dogs. PLAYGROUP: 11/8: When introduced off leash to a female dog in the care center, Bonzai is mostly intent on mounting. When solicited with play, he mimics these behaviors with the intent to still mount. MEDICAL BEHAVIOR: 11/6/16 During his initial medical exam Bozai allowed handling. ENERGY LEVEL: RECOMMENDATIONS: Experience (Suitable for an adopter with some previous amount of dog experience) Potential challenges: _X_On-leash reactivity/barrier frustration (During his stay at our care center, Bonzai has, at times, displayed a low threshold for dog reactivity and frustration on leash: hard pulling, lunging, growling, baring teeth, high-pitched vocalization. Force-free, reward based training is advised when attempting to modify/manage this behavior.)
11/08/2016 GROUP BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – EXPERIENCE
Exam Type GROUP BEHAVIOR
Bonzai has only attempted to mount while in the care center; only mimicking play on one occasion. He escalates in response to correction when he mounts. He arrived to the care center with a female dog, but as a stray so their interactions are unknown. The behavior department recommends not placing Bonzai into a home with other dogs at this time as it is unknown if his mounting will cease in a less stressful environment. 11/8: When introduced off leash to a female dog in the care center, Bonzai is mostly intent on mounting. When solicited with play, he mimics these behaviors with the intent to still mount. 11/9: Bonzai engages in play with the intent to mount. He escalates in response to the other dog who offers correction for this behavior.
