09/06/2016 WEB MEMO
A volunteer writes: Attention Boxer lovers! Bolo shows all the telltale signs of being a Boxer mix– his tail never stops wagging, he’s very eager to please, and you look away for one second only to find him rolling over for a belly rub. He also has the characteristic folded-over ears, white paws and chest, and white diamond on his back. Bolo is very friendly and energetic, loves to give kisses (and licks!), and has a strong sense of smell (in fact, I only realized I had forgotten to zip up my fanny pack when Bolo leaned in to slyly pull out a milkbone!). It’s hard to believe Bolo is really 8 years old– his energy, friendliness, and intelligence make him seem like a younger man, but his salt-and-pepper hair gives him away. A volunteer writes: If YOLO means “You Only Live Once” then BOLO has to represent “Bolo Only Lives Once!” And living life to the fullest MUST be his motto because Bolo genuinely seems to cherish everything! At 8 years old, Bolo hasn’t lost any of the inquisitiveness of puppyhood. His personality is magnetic and staff and volunteers love him. He loves toys and will entertain himself for as long as you let him in the yard. He has the cutest little gait, and will hope around tossing the toy into the air repeatedly. After playing, he will jump up on the bench, admiring his toys between his paws or will show it off to passersby. He’s a sucker for a belly rub, and if you don’t give him one immediately he will roll over to show you want he wants and demand that he gets it! And food? Forget it about it; he’ll eat any treat you have to offer! He’ll sit for one too! BOLO! His love isn’t limited to the food, toys and people in his life either. He is a playgroup helper dog and seems to enjoy the companionship of his four legged friends. In fact, he once lived in a house with over 10 of them! Bolo is also very housetrained and is just as happy going for a walk. If you’ve been meaning to live the YOLO lifestyle, ask to meet BOLO today!
08/29/2016 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – EXPNOCHILD
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
Bolo was brought into the shelter on 7/3/16. Upon intake it was mentioned Bolo was relaxed and greeted the counselor with a wagging tail and loose body, he allowed handling. For his relief walk, Bolo pulled. During SAFER Bolo came into the assessment room appearing friendly and social. During Look, Bolo jumps up on the assessor, tail wagging, body loose. He leans into the assessor for Sensitivity, body soft, ears back. During Tag, Bolo follows, distracted by other stimuli. Bolo became stiff and did not relinquish the Toy. Due to some concerns with the toy item, the Behavior Team recommends he be placed with an Experience Adopter and no children. He would benefit from positive reinforcement training to teach him drop as well as basic manners. Look: 1. Dog leans forward or jumps up to lick the Assessor’s face with tail wagging, ears back and eyes averted. Sensitivity: 1. Dog leans into the Assessor, eyes soft, soft and loose body, open mouth. Tag: 1. Follows at end of leash, body soft, distracted. Squeeze 1/2: 1 Dog does not pull back paw. Lick hand. Toy 1: 3 Dog takes toy away, keeps a firm hold. His body is stiff. Playgroup Notes: Bolo is utilized as a greeter dog, meeting new females dogs displaying loose and wiggly body language. He is tolerant of high energy play and mounting by a female dog but sometimes will offer soft corrections for high energy play and mounting.
07/05/2016 GROUP BEHAVIOR EVALUATION
Exam Type GROUP BEHAVIOR
Bolo was surrendered as a stray so his past behavior around dogs is unknown. When off leash with dogs at the Care Center, Bolo greets other dogs displaying soft body language. He is a bit sexually motivated but is able to listen to hander interruptions and corrections from female dogs and solicit gentle play. Initially he was uncomfortable with high energy play but the last few sessions Bolo engages in rowdy, chase play with body slams and paw slaps. When being introduced to a male dog, Bolo initially displays wiggly body language, but lip curls right as they are about to meet, so the session is ended. He comfortably socializes with a male puppy. When he is not interested in engaging in play he will offer correction by low growling. The Behavior Department recommends that Bolo be placed in a home with a female dog that matches, and is comfortable. with his gentle play style. August Update: Bolo is initially tolerant of an under-socialized puppy who attempted to engage in play. He offers an appropriate correction when she continually solicits him to play. Bolo engages in high energy play with a playful female dog. 8/19- 9/3: Bolo is utilized as a greeter dog, meeting new females dogs displaying loose and wiggly body language. He is tolerant of high energy play and mounting by a female dog but sometimes will offer soft corrections for high energy play and mounting.
