06/27/2017 WEB MEMO
A volunteer writes: I met Blue as he sat, quiet, imperturbable and majestic in the waiting room, being surrendered by his owner’s relative. I was impressed. Blue is with us due to unforeseen life circumstances and here to stay until we find him a wonderful home ready to welcome a friendly but big, strong and enthusiastic boy, a force of nature. Blue was friendly to the staff admitting him to the care center and even jumped to kiss. I had the chance to watch him play in the yard with a caretaker. He is a huge and powerful young man, only eleven months of age. He had so many options to play. Toys, balls, swimming pool…such difficult decisions to make and at times, he clearly did not know what to choose from. He loved to dip his feet in the water, ran and jumped after the ball, caught it and did not mind to relinquish it to his caretaker. He sat for her, paid attention to her voice, did not mind me entering the yard and interacting with him. It is hard not to fall for a gorgeous pup like Blue. As expected, put amidst his peers, Blue threw himself in the crowd and played exuberantly. Ah, youth. Blue seems to have been well cared for. He looks healthy, quite well nourished but his shiny silver coat needs mending. Nothing that a new owner will not be able to mend. Baby Blue is at the Manhattan Care Center, waiting for his new person and teacher. Come and meet him soon.
06/25/2017 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – NH ONLY
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
KNOWN HISTORY: Limited 6/23/17 Unaltered Male, Stray Previously lived with: Adults, children (aged 2,4,5) Behavior towards children: Playful, tolerant, rough Behavior towards dogs: Unknown Behavior towards cats: Unknown Resource guarding: None reported Bite history: None reported Energy level/descriptors: Friendly, affectionate, and excitable with a very high activity level Other notes: Reported concerns of jumping and mouthiness. Blue is crate trained SAFER ASSESSMENT: 6/25/17 Summary: Blue has displayed a high degree of social hyper arousal in the care center, jumping up and leash biting to the point where he begins to snap at the handler’s hand when being returned to his kennel. This behavior makes him not a good candidate for a handling assessment due to safety concerns. At other times, he has displayed social behavior with handlers. PLAYGROUP: 6/25: When introduced off leash to the female greeter dog, Blue runs throughout the pen exuberantly, at times engaging with the other dog playfully. The behavior department feels that Blue may be most compatible with other dogs who are exuberant and social. INTAKE BEHAVIOR: Upon intake, Blue was social and had a loose body. MEDICAL BEHAVIOR: 6/23/17 During his initial medical exam, Blue was active, mouthy, and playful. ENERGY LEVEL: We have no history on Blue so we cannot be certain of his behavior in a home environment. In the care center he has been active and enthusiastic. He may have a low threshold for arousal and needs guidance to learn how to appropriately channel that energy when he becomes overstimulated. He will need daily mental and physical stimulation and exercise, and a force-free, positive reinforcement-based training class may help him to learn impulse control and to train desirable behaviors that can be rewarded.
RECOMMENDATIONS: New Hope Only _X_No children (under 13): Due to the high level of social hyperarousal Blue displays in the care center, we recommend an adult only home. _X_Place with a New Hope partner: Due to the high level of hyperarousal seen at the care center, we recommend Blue to placed with a New Hope partner. A period of decompression is recommended to allow Blue to acclimate comfortably to her new environment; force-free, reward based training only is advised when introducing Blue to new and unfamiliar situations. Consultation with a professional trainer/behaviorist is highly recommended for guidance to safely manage/modify any behavior Blue presents with outside of the care centers. Potential challenges: _X_Social hyper-arousal: Blue has displayed low threshold for arousal, rapidly escalating and quickly tipping over to aggression by snapping at the handler’s hands when he is attempting to return him to his kennel. Immediate intervention and consultation with a qualified veterinary behaviorist/professional trainer is strongly recommended to aid in addressing this issue to prevent further behavioral concerns that may appear in the future if not treated right away. We recommend only force-free, reward based training when introducing or exposing Blue to new and unfamiliar situations. _X_Mouthiness/poor bite inhibition: Decreasing the force of the mouth as well as the frequency of mouthing, in this order is recommended by using force-free, reward based training as well to reinforce a soft appropriate mouth and redirect hard inappropriate mouthing onto toys. _X_Strength/leash pulling: Blue is a very large, strong dog with the capability to pull over an average adopter. His adopter must be prepared and able to handle a dog of this size and strength. It is recommended that he be walked on a front clip harness or head halter, which help diminish his strength through leverage, and that he be trained using positive reinforcement, reward based training to not pull on leash.
