02/25/2016 WEB MEMO
A SI ACC volunteer writes: Blue is hoping that by wearing his St. Paddy’s Day best, the luck of the Irish will be on his side, and he will find a new home quickly. Blue was fun to have out this past weekend. He sat like a pro for his photo shoot and even balanced a hat on his head. He is a big strong dog who can definitely use some leash manners. My guess is he wasn’t walked much or at all in his former home. Blue does know some tricks: he can sit, and give paw. Blue has a lot of puppy energy and would make an ideal running partner. Blue should go to someone experienced with dogs as he lacks some basic doggy manners. If you’re looking for a fun loving new friend, look no further. Blue is for you. Blue is in the Brooklyn Center waiting for you and a little bit o’luck!
02/23/2016 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – EXPERIENCE
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
Blue came into our center as an owner surrender on 2/19/2016. Owner reports Blue lived with two yorkies, prefers playing with little dogs rather than large dogs. It is reported he only lived with adults, but interacted with neighbor’s child, very energetic and exuberant and sometimes overpowering. Owner reports Blue is not housebroken and can be destructive when left alone in the home. Owner describes him as friendly but very high energy, jumpy and overactive. Blue entered SAFER assessment area friendly and sociable, jumped up hard on assessor. He allowed his head to be cupped in assessor’s hands, eyes averted, relaxed. Blue stood still during Sensitivity item, ears and tail neutral, focused on other stimuli, sniffing assessor’s pants. He followed at the end of the leash for Tag game, body soft, focused on other stimuli towards end of game. Blue did not pull his paw back on both Squeeze attempts. He had minimal interest in Toy, focused on sniffing assess-a-hand. He approached the helper dog at an appropriate pace, fast wagging tail, ears back. The Behavior Team feels Blue would do best with an Experienced adopter that does not have young children. He will benefit from obedience classes to learn leash manners and not to jump up as well as crate training. Blue would benefit from daily mental and physical stimulation in the forms of walks, runs, exercise, play as well as durable toys such as kongs and nylabones to positively address his energy and enthusiasm. Look: 1. Dog’s eyes are averted. His ears are back, his tail is down, and he has a relaxed body posture. Dog allows head to be held loosely in Assessor’s cupped hands. Sensitivity: 2. Dog accepts touch, focused on other stimuli. His body is soft, ears and tail neutral. Tag: 2. Dog followed at the end of the leash, body soft, focused on stimuli other than the Assessor towards end of game. Squeeze 1/2: 1. Dog does not pull paw back. Toy: 1. Minimal interest in toy, focused on sniffing assess-a-hand. Dog-dog: 1. Dog approaches the helper dog, fast wagging tail, ears back 3/7 Update: Blue has become barrier reactive and redirects his frustration by biting his leash, thrashing and jumping on whomever is handling him. Due to these concerns, the Behavior Department feels that Blue is rapidly deteriorating within the Care Center and we recommend that he be placed in a home as soon as possible for his well-being and for the safety of the staff.
