Blu A1123507 is at risk for a New Hope Only behavior determination. He is an extremely strong dog and has remained focused on leash-biting when brought out of the kennel. Thus far this has not resulted in any redirection toward the handler, but the behavior has required careful management and may pose a risk if not handled carefully. We have not been able to perform a handling assessment due to this leash biting behavior.

08/30/2017 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – NH ONLY
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
CANINE BEHAVIOR EVALUATION for Blu A1123507 KNOWN HISTORY: Limited 8/27/17 Unaltered Male, Owner Surrender Previously lived with: Adults, children (aged 5-14) Behavior toward strangers: Unknown Behavior toward children: Rough due to size Behavior toward dogs: Unknown Behavior toward cats: Unknown Resource guarding: Barks, growls when food or toys are taken from him Bite history: None reported Housetrained: Yes Energy level/descriptors: Friendly, affectionate, playful, confident, pushy, excitable and independent Other notes: He is well behaved when home alone and has never been crate trained. SAFER ASSESSMENT: 8/29/17 Summary: Blu has displayed intense leash biting behavior when removed from his kennel, holding onto the leash and not relinquishing. When other leashes are used on him, he grabs these leashes as well. Out of safety concerns, he is not a good candidate for a handling assessment at this time. PLAYGROUP: 8/28: Upon being removed from his kennel, Blu pulls extremely hard on the leash and is difficult to manage by an experienced handler. When Blu gets outside he immediately begins jumping up and grabbing the leash. It requires two people to collar him due to his size, strength and drive to bite the leash. Once collared and releashed, he immediately grabs the new leash. He then interacts off leash with handlers and is highly social, jumping up and enjoying petting. When another dog is introduced with a drag leash, he greets briefly then grabs that dogs leash and begins to pull. The leash is unclipped and his leash picked up to remove him from the pen and he jumps up and grabs his leash and starts pulling. Once leashed again with a rope leash he is removed from the pen with two leashes and continues to bite both until returned to his kennel. Due to these observed behavior, Blu is not a candidate for further play group interaction. INTAKE BEHAVIOR: Upon intake, Blu was playful and allowed handling. ENERGY LEVEL: In the care center Blu has been active and enthusiastic. Due to the anxiety seen, he may need some guidance to learn how to appropriately channel that energy when he becomes overstimulated. Blu will need daily mental and physical stimulation and exercise, and a force-free, positive reinforcement-based training class may help him to learn impulse control and to train desirable behaviors that can be rewarded.
IN SHELTER OBSERVATIONS: Blu has shown highly social behavior to all handlers while at the care center. He will solicit attention and enjoys being petted. He is extremely strong and pulls on the leash, and will begin to grab the leash and pull, maintaining his grip even when it is dropped. RECOMMENDATIONS: New Hope Only _X_No children (under 13): Due to intense leash biting seen at the care center and potential for issues with over arousal, we recommend an adult only home. _X_Place with a New Hope partner: Blu has become quickly over aroused at the care center, grabbing any leash brought near him and not relinquishing. Because this has become a handling concern in the care center, we recommend placement with a New Hope partner who is able to lprovide an adult only foster Potential challenges: _X_Basic manners/Poor impulse control _X_Social hyper-arousal: Blu’s low threshold for arousal rapidly escalates while on leash and he is unable to settle; jumping up, grabbing and tugging at the leash. Immediate intervention and consultation with a qualified veterinary behaviorist/professional trainer is strongly recommended to aid in addressing this issue to prevent further behavioral concerns that may appear in the future if not treated right away. We recommend only force-free, reward based training when introducing or exposing Blu to new and unfamiliar situations _X_Leash-biting: Blu has been observed to leash bite intensely, quickly escalating to a state of arousal and becoming difficult to manage at times. To prevent rehearsal of this undesired behavior, we recommend daily mental and physical stimulation to direct Blu’s energy and enthusiasm onto more appropriate outlets rather than the leash in addition to redirecting Blu’s attention (with treats) onto his handler to learn to “focus”.
