08/26/2016 PET PROFILE MEMO
08/26/16 16:12 Blu is energetic and plays with adults great and sometimes roughly. He has been in a home with two 6 year ols who he interacts with well and plays with them and is respepctful of their size. His behavior around othr animals is unknown and his behavior around most strangers is unknown. Blu is not house trained an uses the bathroom indoors every day. He does not destroy anything in the house. Blu does not mind if you take his food or treats away and if you take his toys he will think someone is playing with him. I f trying to bathe, cut nails or restrain Blu he gets squirmy and tries to get away. He has a medium level of activity at home. He sleeps on the floor next to the bed of his owner. He is an indoor dog and when he does something bad his punishment is time in a crate that he goes into on command. He knows, sit, come, lay down, kiss, go eat and get in your cage. He pulls very hard on the leash and should not be walked off leash. He is fed wet and dry pedigree mostly 3x a day but sometimes conctantly throughout the day. Blu was very energetic and did not still long enough to be collared or scanned and has to be slightly restrained and he mouths your hand when councilor puts it near head. While handling for medical Blu jumps and struggles to get away and scratches councilor while trying to struggle to get away but after some patience allows handling.

A volunteer writes: Singing the blues never felt so good! One look into this cross-eyed cutie’s face and I knew Blu and me would be BFFs in no time flat, he’s the sort of guy other volunteers refer to as ‘my type’–strong, smart, handsome and super sociable. He’s good-looking on the outside, good-hearted on the inside and trying SO hard to be a good boy in the totally foreign environment of the Care Center and I just love him for it. Happy tail wags and a snuffly nose told me he was ready to begin adventuring from the moment we met and his sheltered upbringing has clearly had no effect on his ability to make new human friends. Blu spent most of his life indoors and was apparently never walked before and though he pulls hard at first, he soon gets the hang of wearing a leash, eagerly marking the trees we pass as his own and on date number two actually waiting until we reach the park to do his own ‘number two’–good boy Blu! A quick learner who’ll soak up new tricks like a sponge (especially if treats are involved) we’re told he already knows commands for ‘sit’, ‘come’, ‘lay down’, ‘kiss’, ‘go eat’ and ‘get in your cage’ but as his crate was used as a time-out punishment area, I’m sure that last command was one Blu obeyed with a heavy heart. We’re both hoping that positive reinforcement is the name of the game in his new home and if you promise to be patient, Blu promises to try his very best to listen and obey. He loves rough’n’tumble play but gives his toys up without a struggle and is said to be respectful of smaller playmates too, having spent time with a pair of six-year-olds in the past. Playgroup is a whole new world and though Blu is tail-waggingly keen to meet other pups, his high energy (and eye for the ladies) mean he’ll need guidance when it comes to the ins and outs of polite doggie socializing and slow introductions to any four-legged friends. Blu is a special boy whose confined past shouldn’t overshadow the bright new future he deserves, come on in to our Manhattan Care Center and ask for him by name and soon you’ll be singing Blu’s praises too!
08/29/2016 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – EXPNOCHILD
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
Blu came into our care center as an owner surrender on 8/26/2016. It is reported he lived with two six year old children, played well with them, respectful. Behavior around cats is unknown. He is reportedly not housetrained, does not mind if you take his food, toys, or treats away. Blu was energetic upon intake, mouthed counselor’s hand if approaching near his head. He pulled very hard on leash for his relief walk. Upon entering the assessment room, he displayed high energy, jumping on the assessor repeatedly. He held the assessor’s gaze for Look, ears back and tail wagging. When being positioned for Sensitivity, he became aroused and began mouthing the assessor and displacement yawning. During Tag, Blu became uncomfortable; jumping on the assessor multiple times, attempting to grab the leash, body a bit tense. Tag ceased and Squeeze was skipped. He was playful with Toy, kept a firm grip, body loose. When introduced off leash to another dog in the care center, Blu persistently mounts the other and is slow to respond to correction from the helper dog, or handler interruption (he is unaltered). The behavior department believes Blu would benefit best from going to an experienced, adult only home as he shows to be an exuberant dog who requires appropriate outlets for the physical and mental stimulation he needs to thrive. A decompression period is advised to help Blu acclimate to a new home environment; force-free, reward based training is also recommended before introduction/exposure to new and unfamiliar situations to help him succeed. Look: 1. Dog holds gaze, tail wagging, ears back. He allows head to be held loosely in Assessor’s cupped hands. Dog holds gaze for three full seconds. Sensitivity: 2. Dog displays high energy and movement, but it is directed toward getting closer to the Assessor. He mouths assessor’s hand. Tag: 3. Dog responds with his tail high, ears forward, mouth likely closed for at least half of the assessment item, body tense and body checks the Assessor. Dog is often focused on other stimuli in the room. Toy: 1. Dog is playful with you, keeps a firm grip and is loose and wiggly. He does not place his body between you and the toy. Dog to Dog: When introduced off leash to another dog in the care center, Blu persistently mounts the other and is slow to respond to correction from the helper dog, or handler interruption (he is unaltered).
08/27/2016 GROUP BEHAVIOR EVALUATION
Exam Type GROUP BEHAVIOR
When introduced off leash to another dog in the care center, Blu is persistantly sexually motivated and is slow to respond to correction from the helper dog, or handler interruption (he is unaltered). His previous owner does not cite his history around dogs. The behavior team feels that Blu should be allowed time to acclimate to life outside the shelter environment as the only resident dog, before following up on his behavior around them.
