09/01/2016 WEB MEMO
A volunteer writes: It’s impossible not to admire the contrast between Blu’s mangey physical condition and his incredibly wiggly, sunny demeanor. He is so puppylike! My first introduction to him was hearing his tail thumping against the walls of his cage. He is super friendly, outgoing, and seems to have the ability to instantaneously make lemonade out of the lemons he’s handed. He pulls some on leash when he’s excited (other times walks nicely), but it’s always in a we’re-on-an-adventure-together way, and not in a disconnected way. He keeps his cage clean and “goes” right away outside, so may have housetraining. He seems very interested in other dogs and has been playful in our playgroups, but might not get it when the other dog doesn’t also want to play, play, play! He LOVES toys and playing fetch. When I ask him to “sit” before I throw the ball he does and waits patiently, but his chattering teeth reveal how excited he is. I’m sure his skin is uncomfortable, but he doesn’t shy away from touch at all and is very affectionate. Blu will need a little TLC so that his exterior can match his interior, but promises to brighten all of your days! The warmest welcome ever is waiting for you at Brooklyn ACC!
08/26/2016 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – AVERAGE
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
Blu came in as a stray, so his past behaviors in a home are unknown. During SAFER Blu came into the assessment room loose and wiggly, he was friendly and social towards the assessor. He allowed all handling items to be conducted without issue. Blu joins the game during the tag interaction, and during the resources portion of the assessment Blu was easy to handle when engaged with the item. Blu appears to be sociable, and did not display any behaviors concerns, so the department feels he can be suitable for an “Average” adopter. Look: 1. Dog’s eyes are averted. His ears are back, his tail is down, and he has a relaxed body posture. Dog allows head to be held loosely in Assessor’s cupped hands. Sensitivity: 1. Dog stands still and accepts the touch, his eyes are averted, and his tail is in neutral position with relaxed body posture. Dog’s mouth is likely closed for at least a portion of the assessment item. Tag: 1. Dog assumes play position and joins the game. Or dog indicates play with huffing, soft ‘popping’ of the body, etc. Dog jumps on Assessor once play begins. Squeeze 1&2: 1. Dog does not respond at all for three seconds. His eyes are averted and his ears are relaxed. Toy 1: 1. Dog settles close, keeps a firm grip and is loose and wiggly. He does not place his body between you and the toy. Dog-dog: Blu displays loose and wiggly body language when greeting the other dog. He continually solicits play and gently nibbles on the other dog.
08/25/2016 GROUP BEHAVIOR EVALUATION
Exam Type GROUP BEHAVIOR
Blu’s previous owner did not provide any information on Blu’s behavior around other dogs. When off leash with dogs at the Care Center, Blu engages in high energy play with male and female dogs. He continually solicits other dogs to play, sometimes becoming mouthy and frustrated when the dog does not engage. He may begin to growl when play is not reciprocated. With further play group sessions, Blu has been able to engage in appropriate, high energy play with male and female dogs. The Behavior Department recommends that Blu be placed in a home with a dog that is comfortable with high energy play style. 8/25: Blu displays loose and wiggly body language as he greets the other dog with a play bow. He solicits gentle play. He may be slightly sexually motivated but does not attempt to mount. 8/26: Blu displays loose and wiggly body language when greeting the other dog. He continually solicits play and gently nibbles on the other dog. 8/27: Blu displays hyper-motivated behavior, barking at the gate, when greeting another dog. He continually solicits play with the other male dog, ignoring that dog’s body language that he does not wish to engage in play. He begins to become frustrated when the other dog does not engage in play and begins to growl. 8/31: Blu displays soft body language when greeting the other dog. He begins to bark, but is able to listen to handler interruptions and decreases his energy level. He continually solicits play but is able to calmly wander in the pen. 9/2: Blu is playful and solicitous when engaging in play with a group of both male and female dogs. He is often mouthy during play.
