01/16/2016 PET PROFILE MEMO
01/16/16 15:52hrs Blu is described as playful, affectionate, protective. He lived with children aged 11 months to 9 years old. He is playful with the children, allowing them to pet him on his head and back. He also lived with a pomeranian and another Staffordshire terrier. Blue is very playful with the pomeranian; he would keep head butting him and pawing at him to play. When Blu notices other dogs outside, he will attempt to lunge and bark at them. BEHAVIOR Blu is accustomed to being bathed 1x a month. His owner stated that he enjoys being bathed, he would even lay down in the tub to play with the water. When Blu is left alone in the home, he is crated. He will chew on his crate if he isn’t given a toy to play with. Blu isn’t bothered by having his food touched while eating. However he has to be fed on his own because he will growl at the other dogs if they approach him while he is eating. When there are visitors in the house, Blu is kept seperate from them. Blu will growl at people that enter the home that he isn’t familiar with, so his owner doesn’t introduce him to new people in the home. His owner stated that Blu will approach and sniff people that approach his owner while he is being walked outside. FOR A NEW FAMILY TO KNOW Blu know knows the commands “sit” ‘down” “paw and “handshake.” He likes to play with Kong chew toys and running around the home. He is accustomed to being walked at least 2x a day and always on leash. He is taken to dog runs but he is always walked by himself. He is accustomed to eating dry Wellness. He sleeps in his crate at night. He will chew on the pillow beds that he would be given so he sleeps on flat sheets or blankets.
01/20/2016 WEB MEMO
A volunteer writes: Big, beautiful and strong as a bull, young Blu is definitely not a dog for the faint of heart! He’s extremely sociable with people, enjoys a good body massage and eagerly snarfles up treats when they’re offered; but the true love of his life… is his ball. And I don’t mean just one specific ball, Blu loves ALL the balls. He’d carry two (or more) around at once if he could and his favorite pastime is to keep one tennis ball firmly held in his mouth while simultaneously kicking another around with his feet–what an athlete! Surrendered to the Care Center over Landlord issues, Blue has lived in harmony with a Pomeranian and a Staffie as well as a baby and an 11 year old, and we’re told he was very playful with all of them, especially the little Pomeranian! Much as he adores people and his long-term doggie friends, Blu does take issue with strange dogs getting close to him as well as other pups nearing his food bowl, so sloooow intros and solo feedings are the way to go. Blu pulls very hard on leash and I doubt he’s ever had the chance to learn otherwise, but he seems to be quite house trained and is a star pupil when it comes to his commands, responding promptly to both ‘come’ and ‘sit’, dropping the ball to accept a treat and posing for photos like a pro. Lightning fast reflexes are needed to beat him to the ball, but he’s no toy guarder and more than happy to be petted all over with or without it in his mouth. Why not give this good boy the chance to show you his stuff? You bring the commitment, the TLC and the training and Blu promises to bring the chutzpah, the happy butt wiggles and ALL the tennis balls!
01/29/2016 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – EXPERIENCE
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
Update: 1/29/16 Blu came to us as an owner surrender on 1/16/16. According to the owner Blu was playful with children and very playful with other dog in the home which was a Pomeranian. The owner did state that when Blu did see other dogs outside he would attempt to lunge and bark at them. It was reported that Blu had to be fed separately from the other dog as he would growl when the other dog came near his food. In addition, Blu was said to growl at people in the home that he was not familiar with so the owner did not bring new people to the home. SAFER: 1/19/16 Blu pulls hard on the leash. He was excited but very interested in interacting with handler during assessment – jumped up. Blu was excited during some of the handling items, but had soft body language. He was distracted, focused on objects in the room rather than the handler during the tag test. He took the toy with a soft body language. Blu appears to be a high-energy dog that will likely do best with an adopter prepared to provide mental and physical stimulation and appropriate outlets for his energy. Due to all known behavior information the behavior department believes that Blue would do best with an experienced adopter at this time. Look: 3. Dog jumps on the Assessor, consistently rubs his shoulder on the Assessor, will not allow Assessor to conduct the assessment. Sensitivity: 2. Dog displays high energy and movement, but it is directed toward getting closer to the Assessor. His body is soft, jumps up between attempts to lick Assessor. Tag: 2. Dog is not fearful, but is unresponsive to the Assessor, and approaches the Assessor at the end of the game needs coaxing to approach.) He is focused on stimuli other than the Assessor. Squeeze 1/2: 1. Dog does not respond at all for three seconds. Toy: 1. Dog settles close, keeps a firm grip and is loose and wiggly. He does not place his body between you and the toy. Blu has shown a concerning difference in arousal between when he is off leash and when he is on leash. He stiffens, growls, and pulls hard toward dogs when on leash, but will have a more relaxed body posture when off leash in a pen, greeting another dog through the gate. His behavior is conflicting as it may be a barrier frustration or on-leash reactivity. However, due to safety concerns when holding his leash to remove him from the yard, he is no longer a candidate to socialize off leash.
01/20/2016 GROUP BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – EXPERIENCE
Exam Type GROUP BEHAVIOR
When approaching the gate, on leash, Blu stiffens and growls, so he is muzzled. However, once greeting when he is loose in the pen he displays a softer body and wags his tail. He is introduced and begins to put his paws on the helper dog attempting to get behind her to mount. When corrected he continues to attempt to mount and only ceases when handler correction is offered. Blu has shown a concerning difference in arousal between when he is off leash and when he is on leash. He stiffens, growls, and pulls hard toward dogs when on leash, but will have a more relaxed body posture when off leash in a pen, greeting another dog through the gate.
