11/08/2016 WEB MEMO
A volunteer writes: Introducing Blossom…and her tongue! This beautiful girl is a little shy and timid, but EXTREMELY sweet. She walks beautifully on leash and even if she gets startled she recovers quickly. Her cage isn’t always clean, but I suspect she might have some housetraining, just isn’t always ready to “go” in front of strangers yet (She is a lady after all…the kind that burps and drools for treats!). She loves treats (the soft kind over the crunchy kind…maybe some missing teeth are the reason her tongue peeks out so often!), takes them nicely, and knows “sit.” She likes to scope everything out first when I let her off leash, but then wags her tail in a circle when I encourage her to come over, will rest her head on my lap (her eyes, though, still scan around, widening when a loud garbage truck goes by) and even briefly prop her paws up to solicit attention. She seemed curious, but unsure when checking out a more exuberant dog we met through a fence and has been nervous in our doggie playgroups. On a recent walk she got a crunchy leaf stuck to her tongue when she came up from sniffing and, perhaps due to the influence of her Husky neighbor, she even howls in her cage…so endearing!! She is looking for a calm, quiet environment where she can bloom at her own pace…please come see this special lady at Brooklyn ACC!
11/05/2016 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – EXPERIENCE
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
KNOWN HISTORY: Unaltered, Stray SAFER ASSESSMENT: 11/4/16 Look: 1. Dog’s eyes are averted. Her ears are back, her tail is down, and she has a relaxed body posture. Dog allows head to be held loosely in Assessor’s cupped hands. Sensitivity: 2. Dog stands still and accepts the touch, her eyes are averted, and her tail is between her legs, body a bit tense with her mouth closed. Tag: 1. Follows at end of leash, body soft. Squeeze 1&2: 1. Dog gently pulls back her paw. Toy: 1. No interest. Summary: Blossom showed no concerns on this evaluation. DOG-DOG INTERACTION ASSESSMENT: Summary PLAYGROUP: Blossom was surrendered as a stray so her past behavior around dogs is unknown. When off leash with dogs at the Care Center, Blossom is nervous when interacting with male and female dogs. She has become slightly more social with further playgroup sessions, but is sensitive to prolonged greetings and flinches when the other dogs sniff her. The Behavior Department believes that Blossom would be most comfortable as the only dog in the home. MEDICAL BEHAVIOR: 11/4/16: During her initial medical examination, Blossom was tense but with time to warm up she allowed all handling. ENERGY LEVEL: RECOMMENDATIONS: Experience (suitable for an adopter with some previous experience) _x_Single-pet home _x_Recommend no dog parks Blossom has been a bit timid when meeting new people and new dogs, though she shows good coping skills and clear signs of discomfort. Her warning signs are appropriate and she opts to make herself small or avoid with humans and to move away or lip curl with dogs, rather than escalate quickly to a high-level warning. Blossom shows great potential to warm up given time and patience. We recommend an experienced adopter who will help her build confidence through positive experiences.
11/03/2016 GROUP BEHAVIOR EVALUATION
Exam Type GROUP BEHAVIOR
Blossom was surrendered as a stray so her past behavior around dogs is unknown. 11/3: Blossom displays very nervous body language, a tucked body and tense face, and does not walk over to greet the novel male dog. The greeter dog is held to give Blossom the opportunity to choose to greet him. When she walks in close proximity to him, he leans in to greet her. She displays lip curls and walks away from him. 11/5: When interacting with a calm female dog, Blossom is more social but continues to display nervous body language, greeting the novel female with a low body. She is sensitive to prolonged greetings and flinches when the other female sniffs her. 11/6: Blossom gave a male dog a hard correction- bark and lunge- for a prolonged in her face greeting. Otherwise she mostly explored the pen. 11/11: Blossom continues to correct dogs that attempt to greet her. She does not move away from other dogs, instead moves towards them and continues to correct them by growling and snapping at them. The session is ended.
