06/08/2016 PET PROFILE MEMO
06/08/16 16:56 Blossom A1076763 was found tied to a light pole on 6/6/2016 in The Bronx. She was left with food and water. The finder works inside of a flowershop and decided to take her in and keep her in the office. The finderand his coworker have been waiting for an owner to come and claim her but had no Luck. They decided that it would be best to bring her into BXACC. They stated that she is very friendly and allowed all handling and was fed Purina Dog chow dry food. Behavior during intake Blossom was very friendly upon intake. She allowed me to help her finders with her collar and allowed staff to approach and scan(-). She was leashed and stood up on my lap as I typed. She giveshugs and and tolerates all petting. She did not like the organic treats we gave her. She posed for her photos and was walked to the back and transferred into a kennel.
06/14/2016 WEB MEMO
A volunteer writes: When I first met Blossom I think I might have actually said “perfect” aloud. Not just because of her coat. Shiny and black like it was dipped in lacquer. Or her paws. All four capped with white with just a smidge saved for the tip of her tail. And not because of her face. Small and symmetrical beginning with a sweet, oh-so-boop-able nose and ending in two floppy ears. I think I said “perfect” because of her name – Blossom; aka, a work in a progress, a beautiful thing not yet to its full potential. In our first few moments together Blossom is a shy, little mouse. She hugs the back of her kennel moving her paws up and down on her bed like a house cat kneading its pillow. She sniffs the air repeatedly trying to get a sense of who or what I am, hesitant to join me until she does. But that tail – that extra white paint saved just for the tip – it betrays her. And I can see it wagging from a mile away. After some coaxing (and possibly some turkey) Blossom is leashed and we’re off. We certainly won’t win any races on our walk. 2 year-old Blossom peeks around every corner, ducks behind me at a busy intersection, and continues to sniff, sniff, sniff at the air. At some point before our return to a pen she decides I’m a confidant and not only grants me pets, returns to me repeatedly for them. She continues to enjoy her treats and slowly grows more confident in her surroundings. She explores each cranny, tail now untucked, and goes for longer and longer periods without returning to my side. As we’re finishing up our time together she sits at my feet and just then the wind picks up and she sniffs, sniffs, sniffs. It’s only then that I notice her eyes are closed as she does it. She is not questioning. She is savoring. And right there, our Blossom has bloomed. Blossom is waiting in adoptions at Manhattan’s ACC.
06/10/2016 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – EXPERIENCE
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
Blossom came to us as a stray so we don’t have any behavior information other than what has been observed in shelter environment. In the kennel Blossom appears to be fearful in the kennel, and would low growl as the handler attempted to put the slip lead on her. Once out of her kennel Blossom walked well on the leash but had very fearful body language, and tucked tail. When entering the behavior room Blossom was visibly nervous with a tucked tail and very hesitant of approaching the assessor. She would flinch and bow her head away from quick movements. She allowed the assessor to conduct all tactile assessment items without displaying any signs of aggression. However, Blossom did have trembling and fearful bod language throughout the look, sensitivity, and tag items. She displayed no interest in the toy on this portion of the assessment. Due to Blossom’s very fearful nature we recommend she go to a home with and experienced owner and no young children at this time. All interaction should be conducted slowly and Blossom given the opportunity to initiate these interactions at her own pace. Look: 2. Dog’s eyes are averted. Her body posture is trembling and fearful; her tail is low and not moving. She allows head to be held loosely in Assessor’s cupped hands. Sensitivity: 2. Dog stands still and accepts the touch, her eyes are averted, her tail is between her legs, and body soft to the touch, mouth closed, lip long, ears back, trembling. Tag: 2. Follows at end of leash, body a bit tense, low and fearful. Squeeze 1: 1. Dog does not respond at all for three seconds. Her eyes are averted and her ears are back. Squeeze 2: 1. Dog does not respond at all for three seconds. Her eyes are averted and her ears are back. Toy: 1. No interest. When off leash with other dogs, Blossom is social and playful.
