02/17/16 : reported age likely exaggerated: > than 8 but < 14 based on teeth and eyes; OD KCS, scarred, OS seems relatively WNL but aging changes to lens; hyperkeratosis skin typical of malasezzia dermatitis left untreated. some self-inflicted wounds on back, diffuse hyperemic skin; malasezzia and kcs are treatable but chronic. will require (at minimum) medicated baths and cyclosporine eye ointment. prognosis good with care; could use dental: moderate/severe ddz
PROFILE :
BASIC INFO
Blossom is a 14 year old, spayed, Maltese. Her family got her from a breeder when she was a puppy. They cannot keep her due to her health, cost, and pet conflict. For one year, Blossom has been chewing her skin and pulling her hair out. Her owner has used oatmeal shampoo, Benadryl, sweaters, and muzzles to mitigate this. Her condition has improved but persists. She often goes under the bed and chews her skin / pulls her hair out.
SOCIALIZATION
Blossom is friendly with new people. She lived with a child from ages 4 and older and was relaxed and tolerant with him. She lived with 2 other small female dogs and would bite and grab their neck and shake them, sometimes when she was startled (e.g. from the doorbell ringing or the other dogs stumbling near her), but now she does this sometimes when they’re resting near each other. She’s never broken skin while doing this and has never bit anyone else. Blossom lived with a cat and played with and chased him.
BEHAVIOR
Blossom doesn’t mind storms. She loves being held. She doesn’t mind when someone takes her food/treat/toy, moves her off furniture, bathes her, trims her nails, brushes her, or wakes her up. When new people come over, she barks at them and occasionally bites their pants (but not their bodies). If her owner tells her it’s ok, she’ll ignore them. Blossom doesn’t mind when strangers approach her family members.
FOR A NEW FAMILY TO KNOW
Blossom’s family describes her as friendly and affectionate. She used to be playful and medium energy but has had a low energy level for the past month. In the past, she would play fetch with stuffed and squeaky toys. She still follows her family around. She sleeps with her owner. She ate dry Iams and wet Pedigree foods. She was trained to potty on wee-wee pads but has just started having accidents (#1 and #2) daily 2 months ago. She’s well-behaved in her crate but still irritates her skin. She knows sit and come. She went for slow walks and doesn’t pull on her leash. Off-leash, she stayed close to her owner.
INTAKE
Blossom had soft body while I picked her up, pet her, scanned her (-), collared her, and positioned her for pictures. She was a little tense but tolerant while I held her for vaccines. She sat next to me and watched out the door quietly while I worked at the computer.
