Beau
Hello, my name is Beau. My animal id is #7911. I am a desexed male red dog at the Manhattan Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks i am about 2 years 1 months 3 weeks old.
I came into the shelter as a data import – incoming on 01-Oct-2017.
Let’s get to know each other a bit more…
Behavior Determination: Experienced, adult only home A volunteer writes: Handsome Beau is up front in his kennel, so happy to see a human with a leash! Adopted from us a while ago, and recently surrendered as the family is moving into a non pet friendly apartment, we’re told that Beau lived well with children and is protective of them, lived with a small breed dog with whom he played gently, is allergic to chicken, will guard his bone but not his toys, and is wary of strangers when they first come in the home. Beau pottied the moment we were outside, confirming his housetraining skills, showed off his sit for a treat, and gave me a bark when I wasn’t fast enough. Slow down, Beau!! Sitting down with Beau is an invitation to him to climb into the nearest lap and roll over for a belly rub. Even in the biggest lap, he spills over a bit, and it’s adorable to watch his legs waving in the air as he closes his eyes in belly rub bliss. Ignoring other people in the park, he does pull towards squirrels who always come too close to see if there are any left over treats. Beau has a big personality and is looking for a personality to match his. Both affectionate and sometimes pushy, he knows what he wants and asks for it — whether it’s a treat, a hug, or a walk, or whatever. Watch him smile, and you’ll smile too!
Beau 7911 is at risk due to being unable to thrive in the care center. While he has been social with familiar handlers, Beau is anxious and easily startled by strangers at times (in kennel and out) and will incessantly bark as a means to increase distance.

The behavior department recommends slow introductions between Beau and any dogs in a future resident home. Summary (2): 9/30/17: Beau consistently attempts to mount the female greeter dog, and is difficult to distract. Date of intake: 29-Sep-2017 Summary: At intake, Beau had a loose body. When the owner left, he barked Date of initial: 29-Sep-2017 Summary: Allowed handling and cried when alone during his medical intake exam ENERGY LEVEL: Beau he is a young, enthusiastic, social dog who will need daily mental and physical activity to keep him engaged and exercised. We recommend long-lasting chews, food puzzles, and hide-and-seek games, in additional to physical exercise, to positively direct his energy and enthusiasm. IN SHELTER OBSERVATIONS: Beau is social with familiar caretakers though remains a bit anxious in the care center. He has been observed to bark incessantly at people, at times, when startled or uncomfortable though will recover appropriately. We recommend force-free, reward based training when introducing Beau to new and unfamiliar people/situations to best set him up for success. BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION: ADULT ONLY HOME Behavior Asilomar TM – Treatable-Manageable Recommendations: No children (under 13) Recommendations comments: No children: Due to Beau’s previous owner stating he will growl when approached quickly, and due to the anxiety he displays at the care center, we recommend an adult only home. Potential challenges: Resource guarding Fearful/potential for defensive aggression Anxiety Potential challenges comments: Resource guarding:Potential resource guarding was noted in the previous home as Beau was observed to growl when engaged with a bone. For this reason we advise against ever removing items from Beau’s possession without safely trading for an item or greater or equal value. Guidance from a professional trainer/behaviorist is highly recommended to aid in safely managing/modifying this behavior in a new home environment. Fearful/potential for defensive aggression: Beau is reported to growl at people when approached quickly. He does best with a slow approach, and should be permitted to greet new people at his own pace and to initiate interaction (rather than being approached and pet immediately by a new person) so he has time to adjust and become comfortable before he is handled. Anxiety: Beau displays anxious behavior at the care center, barking and whining. We do not know if this behavior will present in a new home environment. If it does, we recommend giving Beau alternative things to do such as walks, Kongs, and puzzle toys. Positive reinforcement, force-free training only should be used.
