09/16/2017 WEB MEMO

A volunteer writes: Blanco has a face designed to break hearts, an irresistibly quirky personality and a lust for life that just won’t quit. In other words, he’s Curious George in a white pittie costume! Affectionate and super social, he likes meeting new friends and leaps onto laps to exchange kisses for snuggles as soon as he’s invited up. Like many hearing impaired pups, Blanco uses his sensitive nose and keen eyes to explore the big wide world and he’s always on the lookout for new and exciting things to spot, snuffle and taste. He walks well on leash, seems house trained and greets other dogs politely but he’s feeling a bit anxious in the unfamiliar Care Center so will need some time to decompress before being introduced to any new four-legged friends. Fun, friendly and full of life, Blanco’s looking for a family who’ll love him as much as he loves, well, everything! If you can offer the patience, structure and boundaries that he needs to succeed (and help him learn some hand commands along the way) then step up and claim your prize today: A lifetime of silly, jumpy, playful Blanco-style love!

09/17/2017 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – EXPERIENCE
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
CANINE BEHAVIOR EVALUATION for Blanco A1125455 KNOWN HISTORY: None 9/14/2017 Intact male, stray SAFER ASSESSMENT: 09/17/2017 Look: 3. Dog jumps on the Assessor, consistently rubs his shoulder on the Assessor, and will not allow Assessor to conduct the assessment. Sensitivity: 2. Dog displays high energy and movement, but it is directed toward getting closer to the Assessor. His body is soft, likely panting, may jump up between attempts to lick Assessor Tag: 1. Follows at end of leash, body soft, Squeeze 1: 1. Dog does not respond at all for three seconds. His eyes are averted and his ears are relaxed or back. Squeeze 2: 1. Dog does not respond at all for three seconds. His eyes are averted and his ears are relaxed or back. Toy: 1. Dog settles down close to chew, will relinquish toy or rawhide to you. Summary: Blanco was extremely anxious throughout his assessment and was focused and intent on mounting the majority entire assessment. PLAYGROUP: When introduced off leash to the female greeter dog, Blanco is tolerant of polite approach. He briefly sniffs to greet, then quickly becomes highly anxious and seeks to exit the area. The behavior department recommends allowing Blanco a period of decompression before immediate introductions to other dogs. Introductions should be conducted at a slow pace to respectful dogs. INTAKE BEHAVIOR: 09/14/2017 Upon intake, Blanco allowed all handling. MEDICAL BEHAVIOR: 09/14/2017 During his initial medical examination, Blanco was active and allowing all handling. ENERGY LEVEL: In the care center Blanco has been active and enthusiastic. Due to the anxiety seen, he may need some guidance to learn how to appropriately channel that energy when he becomes overstimulated. Blanco will need daily mental and physical stimulation and exercise, and a force-free, positive reinforcement-based training class may help him to learn impulse control and to train desirable behaviors that can be rewarded.

RECOMMENDATIONS: Experience (Suitable for an adopter with a previous amount of dog experience) _X_No young children (under 5): Due to the high level of anxiety displayed in the care center, we recommend home without young children at this time. Potential challenges: _X_Anxiety: Blanco has shown some signs of potential anxiety in the care center, vocalizing (whining, barking) continually through the SAFER and through play sessions outside. We cannot be certain whether similar behavior will be seen in a future home environment though recommend practicing positive force-free reward based training when introducing or exposing Blanco to new and unfamiliar situations.
