01/18/2016 WEB MEMO
A volunteer writes: If you’re looking for a soft-hearted, wonderfully well behaved pet then look no further, Blanche is your girl! Even before she arrived at our door, this brindled lovely had already left her paw prints on someones heart and her intake notes read ‘finder stated that Blanche approached her with a wagging tail and immediately started licking her hand’ and that once inside she ‘had a loose wiggly body with a happy tail’ and ‘solicited attention from all staff, pressing her body against them while trying to lick everyone.’ Say it with me now…awwwww! Having realized the Care Center is not a real home Blanche has become more subdued, waiting patiently on her bed for her turn to go out for a walk with crossed paws and pleading eyes. She strolls nicely on a harness, appears very house trained and wiggles her appreciation when I give her a back massage but it’s not until she sees another dog, a plush toy or a treat that I catch a glimpse of the funny puppy hiding behind her serious facade. In playgroup (and greeting on the street) she starts out crouched with her belly down on the ground then–pop!–up she springs to say hello to her fellow pups with soft body language and easy-going tail wags. A tossed toy is reason for celebration and she joyfully shakes it this way and that while running circles around the pen but the minute I bring out a bag all eyes are on me, or should I say, on the treat in my hand! Skinny and hungry as she is, Blanche still shows off an impeccable ‘sit’ without even needing to be asked before softly mouthing her reward like a true lady. If she can be this good under such trying circumstances imagine what a dream she’ll be in a loving forever home surrounded by the family she adores. Give Blanche the gift of a lifetime and she’ll give right back, with bushels of love and affection for years to come.
01/17/2016 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – NH ONLY
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
Blanche came into our center after a member of the public found her as a stray. During intake, she had a loose wiggly body and happy wagging tail, soliciting attention from staff and attempting to lick everyone, allowing all handling. Blanche walked nicely on leash for her relief walk, no pulling. She was calm and friendly upon entering the SAFER assessment room. Blanche held gaze during Look item, body relaxed. She stood still and accepted the touch during Sensitivity item, ears and tail neutral. Blanche followed at the end of the leash for Tag game, body soft but head a bit low. During attempt at Squeeze item, Blanche quickly pulled her paw back and head flipped, lunging towards assessor’s face while barking loudly and rapidly. This rapid escalation to high level warning was startling because previously Blanche was loose bodied, social and attention seeking up to that point. Due to the intensity of the response, handling was ended and no flank was attempted. Blanche engaged with Toy, keeping a firm grip with slow wagging tail and neutral body. Due to her attempting to bite on Squeeze item, Blanche must be placed with a New Hope partner. Look: 1. Dog holds gaze with soft eyes, soft body. She allows head to be held loosely in Assessor’s cupped hands. Dog holds gaze for three full seconds. Sensitivity: 1. Dog stands still and accepts the touch, her eyes are averted, and her tail is in neutral position with relaxed body posture. Dog’s mouth is closed for at least a portion of the assessment item. Tag: 1. Follows at end of leash, body soft, head low. Squeeze 1: 3. Dog is soft in body and eye, and moves her legs/body so that the Assessor is unable to hold the paw Squeeze 1: 5. Dog quickly pulls back, head flip, lunged and snapped at assessor’s face Toy 1. Dog settles close, keeps a firm grip , slow wag, body neutral. She does not place her body between you and the toy. dog-dog: When off leash with other dogs Blanche is a bit tense at the gate but enters the yard and quickly begins to solicit play that is short bursts of exuberant play. If mounted she offers a loud correction then ceases interacting with the other dog.
01/16/2016 GROUP BEHAVIOR EVALUATION
Exam Type GROUP BEHAVIOR
Blanche engages in running play with males and females. She can be pushy when soliciting play and may not cease when the other dog is uncomfortable. She entered the care center as a stray so her in-home behaviors with other dogs are unknown. Based on these interactions the behavior department recommends Blanche have a pre-adoption interaction to ensure the resident dog is comfortable with her play style. When off leash with other dogs Blanche is a bit tense at the gate but enters the yard and quickly begins to solicit play that is short bursts of exuberant play. If mounted she offers a loud correction then ceases interacting with the other dog. 1/19: Blanche engages in bursts of vocal play with another female. She begins to become overaroused and overly mouthy when play carries on. 1/20 update: Blanche solicits running play from the other dog by offering paw slaps and muzzle nudges. She can be pushy and will continue to push the other dog into play when he is not interested.
