11/20/2016 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – EXPERIENCE
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
KNOWN HISTORY: N/A Unaltered, Stray SAFER ASSESSMENT: 11/19/16 Look: 1. Dog holds gaze with soft eyes, soft body. She allows head to be held loosely in Assessor’s cupped hands. Dog holds gaze for three full seconds. Sensitivity: 1. Dog stands still and accepts the touch, her eyes are averted, and her tail is in neutral position with relaxed body posture. Dog’s mouth is likely closed for at least a portion of the assessment item. Tag: 1. Follows at end of leash, body soft. Squeeze 1& 2: 1. Dog gently pulls back her paw. Toy: 1. Dog settles close, keeps a firm grip and is loose and wiggly. She does not place her body between you and the toy. Summary: Blackberry was friendly and social towards the assessor, she displayed no behavioral concerns during her assessment. DOG-DOG ASSESSMENT: Dog Reactive: These dogs need help managing their dog reactivity and should not be allowed off-leash around other dogs until they are provided extensive and supervised socialization with a professional behaviorist or trainer utilizing positive reinforcement behavior modification techniques. PLAYGROUP: Blackberry was surrendered as a stray so her past behavior around dogs is unknown. When off leash with dogs at the Care Center, Blackberry is reactive towards other dogs. Blackberry hard stares, freezes and lunges at the other dog when they greet her face to face. Due to this behavior, the Behavior Department recommends that Blackberry be the only resident dog in the household.
IN SHELTER BEHAVIOR: 11/23/16: Today Blackberry chewed through her leash while being tethered. Once free she proceeded to bark, jump at, lunge, and bite the kennel blockers and bars of other dog’s kennels in Adoptions. She also was attempting to crawl under the kennels to reach the dogs. The Enrichment Coordinator was returning a dog from playgroup at the time and saw Blackberry free so she attempted to, along with an ACO, leash her and return her to a kennel. At this time Blackberry ripped a blocker off a dog’s kennel. The staff attempted to use the blocker to redirect her attention and control the situation, and Blackberry lunged and bit at the blocker but did not redirect onto either staff member. Eventually the Enrichment Coordinator was able to get a leash on her and at this time Blackberry made soft eye contact with the handler and was able to de-escalate quite quickly, and was placed back into a nearby kennel. Even though this incident did not result in any injuries, the Behavior Department feels that Blackberry’s level of dog reactivity and subsequent difficulty to manage now that she can no longer be tethered, poses an undue safety concern for the other dogs in adoptions as well as staff and volunteers. We no longer feel she is a suitable candidate for the adoptions room and it is in her best interest that placement be sought as soon as possible. MEDICAL BEHAVIOR: 11/19/16: During her medical examination, Blackberry was nervous but allowed all handling. ENERGY LEVEL: High level of energy RECOMMENDATIONS: Experience (Suitable for an adopter with a previous amount of dog experience) _X_Single-pet home (See playgroup) _X_Recommend no dog parks (See playgroup)
11/18/2016 GROUP BEHAVIOR EVALUATION
Exam Type GROUP BEHAVIOR
Blackberry was surrendered as a stray so her past behavior around dogs is unknown. When off leash with dogs at the Care Center, Blackberry is reactive towards other dogs. Blackberry hard stares, freezes and lunges at the other dog when they greet her face to face. Due to this behavior, the Behavior Department recommends that Blackberry be the only resident dog in the household. 11/18: Blackberry begins to bark at the bouncy novel male dog through the gate. The greeter dog’s leash is held to give Blackberry the chance to approach on her own. She walks past the greeter dog, ignoring him as she explores the pen. When the greeter dog sniffs her rear end, she looks back at him, lip curling and growling. The session is ended. 11/19: When greeting a calm female dog, Blackberry becomes reactive, barking and growling through the gate. A muzzle is placed on her. Once in the pen, Blackberry hard stares, freezes and lunges at the other dog when she greets her face to face. The session is ended. 11/21: When giving Blackberry treats, she is easily led up to a gate with a dog on the other side. She remains focused on the handler giving her treats and it is hard to redirect her focus onto the other dog. Once she notices the other dog she growls and becomes stiff, but she is easily able to be distracted with treats.
