My name is BJ. My Animal ID # is A1081210.
I am a male gray and white am pit bull ter mix. The shelter thinks I am about 3 YEARS old.

I came in the shelter as a STRAY on 07/14/2016 from NY 11428, owner surrender reason stated was STRAY.

07/14/16 13:50 Basic Information: BJ is a one year old American pit-bull mix. He was given as a gift from a family member. Owner stated BJ is healthy and has no health concerns. Owner surrenders BJ due to owner being disable. Social Life and Personality: BJ lived with two adults and children ages 4 and 5 years old. Owner stated BJ is friendly/outgoing towards strangers and playful and respectful towards children. Owner stated BJ is aggressive towards other dogs and will bark and lunge at them. BJ has never been around cats. Owner stated BJ is mostly indoors and activity level is low indoors and high outdoors. Owner describes BJ has friendly, affectionate, playful and confident. Behavior: Owner stated BJ has scratched someone but no in the last 10 days. Further information will be in behavior memo. He allows owner to touch his food bowl while eating and can eat from owner’s hand. He doesn’t allow owner to take toys or treats away from his mouth because he will tug hold on tight. He isn’t bothered by taking baths or being disturbed while sleeping. He is friendly when people come to the house but unfamiliar people he will bark at first then becomes excited. For a New Family to Know: BJ seems trained to use the bathroom outdoors but will use the bathroom indoors if home alone. He will pull on a leash but goes for slow walks on a leash. He likes to play with toys such as rawhides and bones. BJ is afraid of toys that make noise and fireworks he will bark and back away. BJ knows commands such as sit, down, give paw, treats, wait, no and lap. BJ was never crate trained and goes potty if home alone and not walked previously. He eats dry food called Purina and human food. He likes chicken cutlets and bacon strip. BJ doesn’t like anything peanut butter. BJ likes to sleep in bed with owner. Intake Behavior: Upon intake dog was growling in crate. Once out he as nervous and tense but allowed all handling when approached slowly. He scanned positive for a microchip.

07/16/2016 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – AVERAGE
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
Owner Profile: BJ came into the shelter on 7/14/16; BJ Previously lived with two adults and two children ages 4 and 5 years old. Owner stated BJ is friendly/outgoing towards strangers and playful and respectful towards children. Owner also stated BJ has low tolerance towards other dogs and will bark and lunge at them. BJ has never been around cats. According to the owner BJ has a low activity level indoors and high activity outdoors. The Owner describes BJ has friendly, affectionate, playful and confident. He doesn’t allow owner to take toys or treats away from his mouth because he will tug hold on tight. Intake Behavior: Upon intake it was noted BJ was growling in the crate. Once out of the crate BJ was nervous and tense but when approached slowly he allowed all handling. During SAFER BJ came into the assessment room wiggly and a bit anxious he had a loose body posture when interacting with the assessor, and he allowed all handling items to be conducted without issue. BJ was relaxed during the tag interaction, and during the resource portion of the assessment. BJ was easy to handle when engaged with the item. BJ appears to be sociable, and did not display any behavior concerns, so the department feels he can be suitable for an “Average” adopter. Look: 1. Dog holds gaze with soft eyes, soft body. He allows head to be held loosely in Assessor’s cupped hands. Dog holds gaze for three full seconds. Sensitivity: 1. Dog stands still and accepts the touch, his eyes are averted, and his tail is in neutral position with relaxed body posture. Dog’s mouth is open for at least a portion of the assessment item. Tag: 1. Dog assumes play position and joins the game. Or dog indicates play with huffing, soft ‘popping’ of the body, etc. Dog jumps on Assessor once during play. Squeeze 1: 1. Dog does not respond at all for three seconds. His eyes are averted and his ears are relaxed. Squeeze 2: 1. Dog does not respond at all for three seconds. His eyes are averted and his ears are relaxed. Toy: 1. Minimal interest in Toy, dog smell and, then turns away.

07/16/2016 GROUP BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – AVERAGE

**Social Greeter Dog** According to BJ’s previous owner, BJ will bark and lunge at other dogs. When off leash with dogs at the Care Center, BJ displays soft and bouncy body language while exploring the pen with male and female dogs. He will offer correction to a male that mounts him, growling and then moving away. The Behavior Department recommends that BJ be placed in a home with a dog that matches his calm energy. 7/16: BJ greets with a soft body. He is sexually motivated, continually sniffing the genital area of the female dog. He persists after handler interruptions, only taking brief breaks. 7/21: BJ displays soft body language as he greets another male. He displays soft, bouncy body language as he explores the pen. 7/22: BJ was utilized as a greeter dog and met new dogs displaying soft body language. He will offer correction to a male that mounts him, growling and then moving away.
