03/09/2016 WEB MEMO
A volunteer writes:Maybe I’m just prematurely in the Easter spirit but I was drawn to Billy Kidd from the moment I saw him. A grey mouse with rabbit ears (what a combo!), Billy waits patiently in his kennel as I stroll by, only looking up at me with his furrowed brow as if to say “I’m ready for my walk but I won’t carry on about it.” He didn’t have to. He’s quickly leashed and moments later we’re out on the street which is where I first coin Billy Kidd’s new nickname, “the tortoise.” This sweet low-rider is absolutely NOT in a hurry so if you are, just keep it moving! Billy’s top priority is living in the moment and experiencing life to its fullest. Not one smell can be missed, not one leaf unexamined. That fire hydrant’s not going to sniff itself, people! Unfortunately with that nose to the ground he does manage to miss a couple of passing pups, a squirrel, a few people…but Billy is dedicated to the cause of leaving no smell un-sniffed and not about to be distracted. Later on, free in a pen, Billy continues to diligently inspect his surroundings before finally seeming to declare, “The work day is done. It’s cuddle o’clock.” He scoots himself up next to me on a bench (no easy task with those little legs) and leans in for pets. If Billy’s number one interest is “sniffs” a close second has to be “butt scratches.” Once I find his special spot he begins to frantically wiggle his legs from side to side which is definitely the fastest movement I’ve seen from him all day. The presence of that same serious, furrowed brow throughout it all just makes it more amusing. Billy is a calm, refined, sophisticated gentleman who’s looking for someone who appreciates the details in life and is prepared to take it all in with him. As one of my childhood heros once said, “Life moves pretty fast. If you don’t stop and look around once in awhile, you could miss it.” Why not take a “day off” and come see what I mean. Billy is waiting in adoptions at Manhattan’s ACC.
03/08/2016 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – AVERAGE
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
Billy Kid walks calmly on leash. He was sociable toward the handler during the assessment – soft body, low wag. He was calm and relaxed during handling. Billy Kid was distracted, focused on objects in the room rather than the handler during the tag test. He shows minimal interest with the toys. Billy Kid did not show any concern during the behavior assessment. The behavior department feels that he can go to an Average home. Look: 2. Dog pulls out of Assessor’s hands each time without settling during three repetitions. Sensitivity: 1. Dog stands still and accepts the touch, his eyes are averted, and his tail is in neutral position with relaxed body posture. Dog’s mouth is likely closed for at least a portion of the assessment item. Tag: 2. Dog is not fearful, but is unresponsive to the Assessor, and approaches the Assessor at the end of the game (may need coaxing to approach.) He is focused on stimuli other than the Assessor. Squeeze 1: 1. Dog gently pulls back his paw. Squeeze 2: 1. Dog gently pulls back his paw. Toy: 1. Minimal interest. Dog may smell or lick toy, then turn away. Playgroup Notes: When off leash with other dogs, Billy Kid ignores greeting from the helper dog and instead roams to sniff his surroundings.
03/06/2016 GROUP BEHAVIOR EVALUATION
Exam Type GROUP BEHAVIOR
Billy Kid is tolerant of other dogs, typically greeting then sniffing/exploring his surroundings. He arrived at the care center as a stray, so any in-home behaviors with other dogs are unknown. The behavior department recommends a pre-adoption interaction as well as introducing him to calmer, less playful dogs. When off leash with other dogs, Billy Kid ignores greeting from the helper dog and instead roams to sniff his surroundings. 3/8 update: BIlly Kid greets briefly. He is a bit tense, but ignores play solicitation. 3/9 update: Billy Kid continues to display this behavior. 3/11 update: Billy Kid sniffs the helper dog a few times before going off to sniff the yard.
