08/01/2017 WEB MEMO
A volunteer writes: Tail wagging and up front in her kennel, Miss Billie Jean is ready to make friends and go for a walk. Lively, fun, sweet and sparkly, BJ enjoys the morning air, chasing birds and being part of the early morning activity. Going potty was a priority as soon as we were out the door, and then it’s off to the park. BJ pulls a bit on leash, but nothing major, and much was about the happiness of a walk and exploring a new place. Her tail wags, she’s alert and curious, and when we are off leash in a backyard pen, BJ loves the chance to run. She has the cutest little bunny hop, hop, hop, hop as she chases a toy, checks out a staff person entering the yard and then joins me on the bench for some cuddles and kisses. Treats are taken gently after she shows off her sit, and then she poses for the camera with her serious face on. BJ is an absolute delight who’s looking for a spa day, a good bath, a mani/pedi and just a little simple pampering is what makes us girls feel good. She’ll make you smile, she’ll make you fall in love, she’ll make you want to take her home.

She allows head to be held loosely in Assessor’s cupped hands. Sensitivity: 1. Dog stands still and accepts the touch, her eyes are averted, and her tail is in neutral position with relaxed body posture. Dog’s mouth is closed. Tag: 2. Follows at end of leash, body soft, spins towards assessor on second pass. Squeeze 1: 1. Dog gently pulls back her paw. Squeeze 2: 1. Dog gently pulls back her paw. Toy: 1. Dog settles down close to chew, will relinquish toy to you. Summary: Billie Jean displayed no concerning behaviors on her assessment. PLAYGROUP: Billie Jean has displayed high levels of concerning behavior during introductions to dogs in the care center. She has been observed to react to dogs on leash, lunging, barking, and freezing. Off leash, she has been muzzled for introduction and has been observed to become tense, hard stare, chase, and eventually attempt to pin the helper dog to the ground. The behavior department recommends a single dog residence for Billie Jean. It is also encouraged that caretakers of Billie Jean exercise caution and vigilance when walking through areas where there may be high amounts of dog traffic. INTAKE BEHAVIOR Upon intake, Billie Jean appeared nervous but allowed handling. MEDICAL BEHAVIOR: 7/30/17 During her initial medical exam, Billie Jean was social and allowed handling.
ENERGY LEVEL: We have no history on Billie Jean so we cannot be certain of her behavior in a home environment. However, she is a young, enthusiastic, social dog who will need daily mental and physical activity to keep her engaged and exercised. We recommend long-lasting chews, food puzzles, and hide-and-seek games, in additional to physical exercise, to positively direct her energy and enthusiasm. RECOMMENDATIONS: Experience (suitable for an adopter with some previous dog experience, especially with behaviors outlined below) _X_Single-pet home Potential challenges: _X_On-leash reactivity/barrier frustration: At the care center, Billie Jean has been observed to react to other dogs on leash, pulling towards them, staring at them, and freezing. Billie Jean may need positive reinforcement, reward based training to teach her to look at you rather than other dogs and novel stimuli that may startle her. We recommend a front clip harness or head halter to help manage this behavior.
