03/29/2016 WEB MEMO
A volunteer writes: ‘He’s affectionate and likes to play’…Those words from his former owner sum up Biggie’s personality in a nutshell, but this mature hunk comes with so many awesome ‘extras’ that we can’t just stop there. He’s gentle and relaxed with children from babyhood to teens, respectful yet exuberant with other dogs and has a host of commands already under his belt including come, sit and drop it. Crate trained? Of course! Food or toy guarding? Never! We’re told he’s house trained and well-behaved when left home alone and that he even knows not to climb on the furniture–how many dogs can say that?!! Biggie is beautiful inside and out and his coat is the softest I’ve ever felt, like running my hand over a bolt of satin. He can be a little shy at first, but speed things up with a gentle hand sniff or a tasty treat, and Biggie will adjust your status from stranger to trusted friend in no time. He quite literally pees the minute he leaves his den and proves to be an eager but responsive walker who likes to make plenty of ‘sniff stops’ along the way. Off-leash, his energetic personality shines, and while he’s keen to show off his ‘come’ and ‘sit’ for a treat or the ball, as soon as another dog enters a neighboring pen, the program shifts to glued-to-the-fence vocalizing and tail wagging, and our photo shoot has clearly fallen to the bottom of his to-do list! Biggie is full of fun but he has a sensitive side too, and he’s looking for a new family who’ll be able to lavish him, not with expensive toys or food, but with something much more precious…time and love. Is your heart big enough for Biggie?
03/27/2016 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – EXPERIENCE
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
Biggie came into our center as an owner surrender citing housing issues. It is reported he has been around children ages 0-12, relaxed and playful, gentle. Owner reports Biggie is fearful around strangers, barks. He is reportedly not bothered if anyone touches his Food, Toys, Treats. It is reported Biggie is housebroken and sleeps at night in his crate, knows the commands ‘sit’, ‘come’, ‘go’, and ‘drop it’. He is described as friendly, affectionate, playful, confident, and excitable. Upon intake, if approached too quickly, Biggie would growl, bark and lunge with a wagging tail. Once approached slowly with no eye contact he continued to wag and stops barking. Biggie pulled hard on leash for his relief walk. He began barking at handler upon entering SAFER assessment room. Biggie held gaze for three full seconds during Look item, tail wagging. He stood still and accepted the touch during Sensitivity item, lip lick, ears back. Biggie was distracted and unresponsive during Tag game, settled easily at end. He pulled back on first Squeeze attempt, quickly pulled back on second paw Squeeze. Biggie kept a firm grip on Toy with his paw, body loose. He approached the helper dog a bit quickly, tail above spine level, ears forward, began barking. The Behavior Team feels Biggie would do best with an Experienced adopter. He may benefit from a slow introduction, preferably with treats, where Biggie may approach when at his own pace. Look: 1. Dog holds gaze with soft eyes, soft body. He allows head to be held loosely in Assessor’s cupped hands. Dog holds gaze for three full seconds. Sensitivity: 2.
