07/30/2016 WEB MEMO
A volunteer writes: Be sure to bring your sunglasses when you come to meet Big Redd as his coat is so shiny with good care you’ll need them. He’s so magnificent it’s hard to believe that nature made his amazing color. He’s named Big Redd with good reason, he needs to be seen to be completely appreciated as photos just don’t do him justice. So quiet in his kennel, he pulls hard on his leash once out for a walk, going potty his first priority. Once in the park Big Redd didn’t mind being tethered for photos, makes deliciously soft eye contact, takes treats super gently, and I found the ‘magic spot’ on his neck that got his back leg going! Too cute. As we took pictures he showed off his sit, and then stood to watch a couple of small dogs walk by and gently wagged his tail. On our way back to the building we stopped to watch some squirrels chase each other, and some birds playing in pooled water from the morning rain – just watching quietly, too old friends who had just been snuggling on the park bench and exchanging some kisses. In his first playgroup Big Redd engaged in play when solicited by the helper dog. Found tied to a gate with his friend Bubble Yumm (A1082932) he’s so gentle, social and gorgeously groomed it’s clear he had been a cherished companion. He’s such a nice dog I so enjoyed my time with him and while I can’t be his forever person, you, lucky adopter, can. Come meet Big Redd today, and oh, don’t forget your sunglasses!
07/30/2016 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – EXPERIENCE
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
Big Redd pulls hard on the leash. He was excited but very interested in interacting with handler during assessment – jumped up. He was excited during some of the handling items, but had soft body language. Big Redd followed the assessor at the end of the leash very jumpy with a relaxed body language when playing tag. He took the toy with a soft body language. Big Redd is an active dog he need a significant amount of exercise and mental stimulation. The behavior department feels that he can go to an experienced home. Look: 3. Dog jumps on the Assessor, consistently rubs his shoulder on the Assessor, and will not allow Assessor to conduct the assessment. Sensitivity: 2. Dog displays high energy and movement, but it is directed toward getting closer to the Assessor. His body is soft, likely panting, may jump up between attempts to lick Assessor. Tag: 1. Follows at end of leash, very jumpy, body soft, ears relaxed, open mouth. Squeeze 1 & 2: 1. Dog gently pulls back his paw. Toy: 1. Dog settles close, keeps a firm grip and is loose and wiggly. He does not place his body between you and the toy. Playgroup Notes: When off leash with other dogs, Big Redd initialyl appears interested in mounting and sexually motivated behaviors. However, he does begin to engage in play once solicited. He arrived as a stray with another dog who has been observed to be playful with other dogs at the care center. However, there is no in home information on Big Redd and his behaviors with dogs in the past. The behavior tema feels that Redd should require a pre-adoption interaction but could be considered for placement into a home with another dog.
