SAFE 10/30/17
Hello, my name is Big Ben. My animal id is #9476. I am a male brown dog at the Manhattan Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 1 years 1 weeks old.
I came into the shelter as a aco impound on 11-Oct-2017.
Big Ben 9476 is at risk for a respiratory illness (CIRDC). Behaviorally, Big Ben has been social and affectionate with his human caretakers and playful with other dogs, sometimes playing a bit roughly. He may need some guidance with basic manners and impulse control but we believe he is suitable for an adopter with an average amount of dog experience.
Let’s get to know each other a bit more…
A volunteer writes: So appropriately named, Ben is big in stature, personality and most importantly, love! Lots of big love happening here. Stunning in his Cafe Au Lait coat, perfect weight and wagging tail, Ben is a goofy guy who knows he’s a lap dog, and will make it work no matter what. Kisses come next, or during, and he’s so sweet and happy to have found you, there’s just no resisting his charm. As we walk, he looks up at everyone, perhaps wondering if this person could be his new family. Ben does pull on leash, so a harness may help make it a more enjoyable walk for both ends of the leash, but when he looks up at you with those gorgeous eyes, all is forgiven. Noticing and ignoring dogs of all sizes that pass us in the park, as well as a bird that landed not more than two feet away from us, Ben is simply happy to be with his person. He’s a happy dog! In his playgroups, he’s enjoyed bouncy play with females, and hasn’t been introduced to males as of this writing. Likely housetrained, and move in ready to be with his new family, Ben is looking for love, snuggles and exercise. You’ll be happy to have Big Ben by your side, and needless to say, he’ll be thrilled! Meet him today. Another volunteer writes: So, so handsome, and his one ear up and one ear down creates the unique, quizzical and in a way comical look that makes my heart melt. Likely housetrained, playful, fun, fabulously affectionate, Benny sometimes jumps to show what a good time he’s having, but when I say no and turn from him, he stops. Smart boy, he gets it immediately. So, add ‘very smart’ to the list of fabulous attributes, and you have one heck of a dog. Big in stature, big in personality, he’s an awesome dog waiting to meet his soulmate in Manhattan.

Behavior Asilomar: H – Healthy
Potential challenges: : Basic manners/poor impulse control
Potential challenges comments:: Basic manners/poor impulse control: Big Ben jumps up on people in a social manner. It is recommended that default behaviors such as “Leave it”, “Sit/Stay”, “Down” are reinforced to substitute any frustration and teach him to control his impulses instead of simply reacting; proper management is also advised. Force-free, reward based training only is recommended.
