A volunteer writes: A lovely Easter rabbit as white as snow! Pretty and petite Betty was found tied up to a tree with handsome but hurt Butch. Betty seems to have had a litter recently and is a tiny bit on the thin side, although well groomed. She is as hungry as a bear, will sit or jump for treats and search my goodies bag for more. Her body, tail and ears are in alert when she sees or hears other dogs but she does not bark or growl at them. Mingling with her peers in playgroups alleviated her worries and she presently enjoys herself quite well with other pooches. She seems at first all about survival as she does not appear to have had the most pampered life. She comes around, though and acknowledges me as a friend pretty quickly. Betty comes right away when I call her, even runs, tail wagging. She hops on the bench and even starts giving little kisses. She pulls on the leash and does her business on the way. She is not really interested in the tennis ball at this point in time. I think that it is time for Betty to get her chance at a better, safer and healthier life in experienced and loving hands. Her abandonment is maybe her chance to hit the jackpot and be the pet she never even dreamed to be. Betty is at the Manhattan Care Center, waiting to meet you. Another volunteer writes: If you had been strolling down 110th street earlier, you would have rolled your eyes to hear two grown women cooing sticky-sweet sentiments like, “How’d you get so beautiful?” and “Are you the cutest girl in the whole wide world, or the most beautiful?” But as you got closer you would have seen the subject of the sweet talk, and would then have been unable to resist joining in on the praising of the lamb, the lass, the love that is Betty!!!!! She is perfect on a leash, she appears housetrained, she has a tail that never stops wagging, and she is so gentle, so kind, with eyelashes that make us swoon, and…don’t let us make fools of ourselves in public again–please come rescue her, and let your own sweet talk begin! A staff member writes: I testify that all statements made about Betty’s head-turning beauty are all true.

03/31/2016 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – AVERAGE
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
Betty pulls a bit on the leash. She was calm and relaxed during handling. Betty was distracted, focused on objects in the room rather than the handler during the tag test. She took the toy away but had soft body language. Betty did not show any concern during the behavior assessment. The behavior department feels that she can go to an Average home. Look: 2. Dog pulls out of Assessor’s hands each time without settling during three repetitions. Sensitivity: 2. Dog repeatedly turns toward the Assessor’s hand, with loose body and open mouth, dog licks hands while lips are long. Tag: 2. Dog is not fearful but unresponsive when touched. Approaches the Assessor when the game ends. Dog is likely crouching, may have long lip or lip lick. Squeeze 1: 1. Dog gently pulls back her paw. Squeeze 2: 1. Dog gently pulls back her paw. Toy 1. Dog settles close, keeps a firm grip and is loose and wiggly. She does not place her body between you and the toy.
03/31/2016 GROUP BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – AVERAGE
Exam Type GROUP BEHAVIOR
Betty was tense with a male during her first interaction but since she has been polite and social with males and females. She engages in soft play, often soliciting by bouncing near the other dog. She arrived at the care center as a stray (she was found with a male dog), so any in-home behaviors with other dogs are unknown. The behavior department recommends a pre-adoption interaction to ensure the resident dog is comfortable with her play style. When off leash with other dogs, Betty greets politely with soft body language. When solicited with play, Betty becomes a bit tense. She runs alongside the greeter dog, and begins to vocalize. When the greeter dog stops running, she stands over him and vocalizes once more. 4/2 update: Betty is a bit tense but does engage in some bouncy play with a polite male. She then spends her time exploring the pen. 4/5 update: Betty engages in bouts of soft play with males and females. 4/6 update: Betty solicits running chase play with males and females. 4/7 update: Betty engages in soft play with males and females.
