I am a male tan maltese mix. The shelter thinks I am about 5 YEARS old.
I came in the shelter as a STRAY on 02/01/2017 from NY 11694, owner surrender reason stated was STRAY.

02/01/17 Microchip scan neg. MI, approx. 5 years. O: BARH. mm=pink, moist, CRT<2 s. Growling, trying to bite. Very tense with handling. ORAL: Mild calculus, gingivitis. EENT: No oculonasal discharge. H/L: Lungs clear, no murmurs/arrhythmias. No coughing. ABD/UG: Intact male, one testicle palpable in scrotum. Other testicle not palpable. Tense on abd palpation. MS: Amb x 4, no lameness. INTEG: Matted haircoat. A: Age est. 5 years. Unilateral abdominal cryptorchid. Matted. Mild dental disease. P: OK for castration surgery. Also ok to sedate for grooming. Removed from Fast track due to behavior Excellent prognosis.

02/01/17 09:08 The surrender states that when they arrived, Bernie appeared nervous (shaking and snapping). Bernie was standing agaisnt the wall so the surrender was able to put a crate in front of Bernie so that he had to walk inside. When arriveing at the care center, Bernie would approach the counelsor but would back away. The couneslor was able to leash Bernie and walk him our of the carrier. Bernie was pantign throughout the admissions process but allowed to be picked up for photos and collared.

KNOWN HISTORY: 2/1/17 Unaltered male , Stray Other notes: During intake process Bernie was nervous. He was trembling and began snapping at the finder, and backing away from the counselor. SAFER ASSESSMENT: 2/3/17 Look: 2. Dog’s eyes are averted. His body posture is a bit tense, his tail is low and not moving. He allows head to be held loosely in Assessor’s cupped hands. Sensitivity: 1. Dog stands still and accepts the touch, his eyes are averted, and his tail is in neutral position with relaxed body posture. Dog’s mouth is closed for at least a portion of the assessment item. Tag: 1. Follows at end of leash, body tense, dog was wary. Squeeze 1: 1. Dog quickly pulls back his paw. Toy 1: No interest. Summary: Bernie was tense and uncomfortable during his handling assessment. He was tolerant of most items, but did lip curl during the second squeeze attempt. DOG-DOG INTERACTION ASSESSMENT: Summary PLAYGROUP: Bernie was surrendered as a stray so his past behavior around dogs is unknown. When off leash with dogs at the Care Center, Bernie is social, checking in on the small male and female dogs often as he explores the pen. MEDICAL BEHAVIOR: 2/1/17 Bernie was growling and tense bodied, attempting to snap during his initial medical examination. ENERGY LEVEL: RECOMMENDATIONS: New Hope Only _X_No children (under 13) _X_Place with a New Hope partner: Due to all noted concerns displayed during Bernie’s time in the care center, and handling assessment, the behavior department recommends Bernie can be placed with a New Hope placement partner who is able to provide an experienced adult-only home. Consultation with a professional trainer/behaviorist is highly recommended for guidance to safely manage/modify any behavior Bernie presents outside of the care centers. Potential challenges: _X_Fearful/potential for defensive aggression: Bernie remains uncomfortable during his stay at the care centers and has displayed all appropriate warning signals when highly stressed. We recommend allowing Bernie to interact at his own pace as well as allow for a period to acclimate to a new home environment.
