Bernie came into the shelter as a stray, so his past behaviors in a home are unknown. Upon intake it was reported that Bernie was calm and relaxed, he allowed all handling. During SAFER Bernie came into the assessment room loose and friendly, he was friendly and social towards the assessor. He allowed all handling items to be conducted without issue. Bernie was relaxed during the tag interaction, and during the resource portion of the assessment Bernie was easy to handle when engaged with the item. Bernie appears to be sociable, and did not display any behavior concerns, so the department feels he can be suitable for an “Average” adopter. Look: 1. Dog holds gaze with soft eyes, soft body. He allows head to be held loosely in Assessor’s cupped hands. Dog holds gaze for three full seconds. Sensitivity: 1. Dog leans into the Assessor, eyes soft, soft and loose body, open mouth. Tag: 1. Follows at end of leash, body soft. Squeeze 1: 1. Dog does not respond at all for three seconds. His eyes are averted and his ears are relaxed. Squeeze 1: 1. Dog gently pulls back his paw. Toy 1: 1. Dog settles close, keeps a firm grip and is loose and wiggly. He does not place his body between you and the toy. Dog-Dog:6/7: Bernie was utilized as a greeter dog today and met new dogs with a soft body. He solicits and engages in gentle play with males and females. He mounts male dogs as they play. When introduced to a dog that was hard staring with a stiff body, he reacted with growling.

Bernie was surrendered as a stray. His finder stated that Bernie was playful with his dog but engaged in rough play. When off leash with dogs at the Care Center, Bernie engages in play with males and females but may become uncomfortable and begins to correct and react when the energy level increases. He attempts to mount males. 6/6: Bernie is initially a bit nervous. He becomes more relaxed as the session continues and displays bouncy body language and solicits gentle play. 6/7: Bernie was utilized as a greeter dog today and met new dogs with a soft body. He solicits and engages in gentle play with males and females. He mounts male dogs as they play. When introduced to a dog that was hard staring with a stiff body, he reacted with growling. 6/8: Bernie engages in high energy play but begins to correct when the energy level exceeds his comfort level and requires handler interruption to continue play.
