05/26/2016 PET PROFILE MEMO
05/26/16 10:33 Bernadette was found tethered outside and brought to ACC by police. They report that she was timid but friendly and had a low body posture but allowed them to put her in a crate. Bernadette was sitting leaning into the side of the crate. She wagged her tail low while she sniffed my hand and while I grabbed her leash. She walked into the building with a low tense body and tail. Once in Admissions, her body softened, her tail wagged (neutral), and she usually had her mouth open. She stepped away a little and her mouth closed while I scanned her (-). She maintained a soft body, wiggly butt, and wagging tail while I pet her, talked to her, collared her, and positioned her for pictures. She sat when asked. She approached me and sat next to me when I crouched. When I worked at the computer, I attached her leash to my waist. She sat or lied down near the end of the leash but without creating tension, looking out the window in the door with her ears perked to the side and wagging her tail.
05/30/2016 WEB MEMO
A volunteer writes: Don’t forget your sunglasses when you come meet this little girl as her coat GLEAMS with good care. She’s petite, her weight is perfect for her size, she seems to be housetrained, is good on leash (pulling slightly from time to time to get to the next best sniff), and is social and affectionate. After our walk we head into the yard for some off leash time, and when Bernadette spots the tennis ball her tail wags, she breaks into a huge smile and we play!!! She brings the ball back, lets me take it out of her mouth, will chomp on it while it’s in my lap, then we play tug with another toy – LOVE HER! Low key, quiet energy, a great easy tail wag, sparkling eyes – she’s a doll. Found tethered and brought to our care by the police she lay in the admissions office, tail wagging and looking out the window. It’s easy to see that Bernadette was loved and well taken care of before joining us and we wish for her to find true love and a wonderful person/family with whom to spend the rest of her life. Come meet our resident sweetheart today.
06/01/2016 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – EXPERIENCE
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
Initially highly fearful and needing a very slow approach, Bernadette has acclimated well and warmed up to her caretakers. She is no longer showing the stiff and tense body language and is now loose-bodied and attention soliciting with human visitors. She showed no red flag behaviors on her SAFER aggression assessment. We recommend an experienced adopter who is prepared for an acclimation period should Bernadette become timid in a new environment. 5/28 SAFER: Bernadette came to us as a stray, so we don’t have any behavior information other than what has been observed in the shelter environment. She walked slowly on the leash, and was slightly interested in investigating the assessor when entering the behavior room. When in the behavior room Bernadette did display shy and nervous body language. She was wary of fast movements and the assessor had to approach her slowly. She maintained stiff and tense body language throughout all of the handling items. She followed at the end of the leash on the tag interaction with tense and fearful body language, but turned quickly on the last pass with tense body language. Bernadette proved easy to handle when chewing on the toy item, keeping a firm grip as the assessor attempted to take it from her. Look: 2. Dog’s eyes are averted. Her body posture is stiff and fearful; her tail is low and not moving. She allows head to be held loosely in Assessor’s cupped hands. Sensitivity: 2. Dog stands still and accepts the touch, her eyes are averted, her tail is between her legs, body stiff, mouth closed, lip long, ears back, lip lick. Tag: 1. Follows at end of leash, body soft, or low and a bit fearful. Squeeze 1: 2. Dog closes mouth, becomes a bit stiff. Squeeze 2: 2. Dog closes mouth, becomes a bit stiff. Toy: 1. Dog settles close, keeps a firm grip and is loose and wiggly. She does not place her body between you and the toy. When off leash with other dogs Bernadette is loose and wiggly when greeting but when introduced she drops to the ground, rolls over onto her back and lips the helper dogs mouth. She stands up when he walks away but will offer a yelp/correction when he attempts to solicit play.
