10/24/2016 WEB MEMO
A volunteer writes: What is most touching about 3 year-old Berk? Is it the way he sits at the back of his spotless kennel when it’s time for a walk, while all those around him spring forward? Is it how he studies me silently? A motionless oak in a storm full of barks – steadfast, sturdy, and true. Or is it his eyes? Green like a young blade of grass first through the snow but full of winter’s memories. Eyes, that at 3 years-old, should be wide with excitement, newness, and light, but are full of uncertainty and fear. No. It’s not any of those things. For me the moment comes later. After Berk has gathered his courage for our walk, trotted beautifully by my side, and accepted my hand on his head after only a flinch or two. It’s when we begin to walk again and see our first stranger. A lanky gentleman in a wide-brimmed hat strolling confidently our way. Me, I barely notice him. But Berk is laser focused. And as we cross paths Berk, the wallflower, the violet, the motionless oak, moves happily towards him, and searches his face. “Is that you???” But he’s gone in a flash and Berk is left unnoticed. And as I swallow a lump and urge us forward, Berk stops and can only look back. “…was that him?” he seems to say. “It wasn’t,” I whisper. And I whisper it again, and again, and again, and once more. For the woman with groceries, the man on the phone, the mother and her daughter, and a pair of laughing friends. Berk searches every one of them, his eyes hopeful and bright, and to all he goes unnoticed. Except by me. By me he will never go unnoticed. Pray that another sees him tonight.

Exam Type BEHAVIOR
KNOWN HISTORY: N/A Unaltered, Stray SAFER ASSESSMENT: 10/23/16 Toy: 1. No interest Dog/dog: 1. Berk approached an on leash dog at the care center body not still, tail below spine level Summary: Assessor approached to put a leash on him and he began growling. The tactile portions of the assessment were not conducted; Berk must be placed with a New Hope partner. PLAYGROUP: Summary MEDICAL BEHAVIOR: 10/20/16 During his initial medical exam Berk did not tolerate handling and growled upon approach. ENERGY LEVEL: RECOMMENDATIONS: New Hope Only _X_No children (under 13)(See potential challenges) _X_Place with a New Hope partner (Berk has not acclimated well to the kennel environment and has allowed only minimal handling since intake and is now shut down in shelter. Due to this behavior, Berk is not a candidate for a SAFER assessment at this time. We recommend placement with a New Hope partner who can provide any necessary behavior modification (force-free, positive reinforcement-based) and re-evaluate behavior in a stable home environment before placement into a permanent home.) Potential challenges: _X_Fearful/potential for defensive aggression (Berk has solely displayed fearful behavior in shelter, he displays no social behavior towards handlers and attempts to increase distance/avoid. Because he is so uncomfortable, Berk does not tolerate any form of direct touch at this time.)
