06/21/2017 WEB MEMO
A volunteer writes: It didn’t take long for Bentley to have me wrapped around his little paw. Well, BIG paw. You know you’ve found a good dog, when you see that he allowed someone in his former home to paint his toenails! I can only imagine one of the children he used to live with giving him a spa day. He also lived with a small dog, whom he got along well with, and is reportedly relaxed with other dogs. In spite of being rather large, he is a bit of a scaredy cat, and when he saw a large rubber red ball in the yard, he army-crawled toward it, not quite sure what to do with it. Once he nudged it with his nose a few times, and realized it posed no threat, he grabbed another ball and eagerly showed me his fetching skills and how he can drop the ball on command. Bentley walks nicely on the leash, keeps his kennel clean and is a gorgeous dog to boot! Bentley is already neutered and ready to go home. Ask to meet him today!

PLAYGROUP: When off leash with dogs at the Care Center, Bentley has not been fully comfortable when interacting with male and female dogs, both playful and calm. According to his previous guardian, Bentley has lived with other dogs and was relaxed and playful with them. Due to Bentley’s display of low sociability towards other dogs, the Behavior Department recommends that he be the only dog in the home at this time. INTAKE BEHAVIOR 6/12/17: Upon intake Bentley was loose and wiggly, he allowed all handling. MEDICAL BEHAVIOR: 6/14/17: During his medical examination, Bentley was friendly though cautious. ENERGY LEVEL: His previous owner reports a high activity level, which matches what we have seen in the care center.
RECOMMENDATIONS: Experienced (suitable for an experienced dog owner due to Bentley’s behavior around other dogs.) Potential challenges: _X_House soiling: Bentley is noted to have occasional accidents in the house, and will likely need guidance with house training. We recommend ONLY force-free, reward-based, positive reinforcement training methods. Accidents should never be punished as it can damage the human-dog relationship and is likely to make the problem worse. _x_ Single dog home/no dog parks: Since Bentley has not been comfortable when around other dogs, the Behavior Department recommends that he be the only resident dog at this time. Reward-based, force-free training is recommend the help Bentley associate other dogs with things he enjoys, like toys or treats. See GROUPBEHAVIOR entry for more details.
