02/02/2016 WEB MEMO
A volunteer writes: “He loves baths and brushing, is crate trained, housetrained, friendly, affectionate and playful. He loves to play fetch, tug, and chase, lived with a child and is friendly to strangers.” Bentley has a glowing resume from his former family who surrendered him when they moved where he wasn’t welcome. Bentley tried hard, and succeeded, to get my attention and went potty the moment we were outside. Good boy, Bentley! His tail wags constantly, and as we walk I admire his pristine white coat and gorgeous light green eyes. He pulls slightly on the leash but no biggie, and we’re told by his former owner that he’s used to being walked 3x a day. Stopping to pose for some pictures, Bentley makes soft eye contact and softly takes treats from my hand. In the yard Bentley hops up on the bench beside me for a quick snuggle, briefly plays with a toy and checks out what’s going on in adjoining pens. Through it all his tail wags, wags, wags! Bentley is so nicely behaved, our assessment team feels he can go to a home with average dog experience. And as we’re told he chases kitties, no kitties please. He’s ready to show you how wonderful he is… come meet him today.
02/03/2016 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – EXPERIENCE
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
Bentley has shown a concerning level of arousal when interacting off leash with other dogs. He interacts politely but then escalates without provocation. He begins snapping at her mouth and only ceases when handler correction is offered. Once his leash is taken to lead him out of the pen he pulls toward the other dog, growling with a stiff body. Because of his quick escalation without warning and continuing to pursue the other dog after the incident, the Behavior Team feels Bentley should go to an experienced home. Bentley came into our center as an owner surrender citing moving issues. It is reported he plays exuberantly with adults and children, has lived with a young child. Owner reports Bentley chases cats. Owner states Bentley is crate trained and uses the bathroom outside in the yard. He is described as friendly, affectionate, playful, and excitable. During intake, Bentley was excited, jumping up on staff and licking hands, allowed all handling. He was very social, alert, and friendly during his initial medical exam. Bentley was friendly and sociable upon entering SAFER assessment room. He allowed his head to be cupped in assessor’s hands during Look item, tail wagging. Bentley leaned into assessor during Sensitivity item, slight whine, tail wag. He was distracted and unresponsive during Tag game, approaching assessor at end with coaxing. Bentley did not pull his paw back on both Squeeze attempt, tail wagging. He playfully engaged with Toy, but relinquished easily. Bentley approached the helper dog a bit quickly, whining, tail above spine level and wagging. Look: 1. Dog’s eyes are averted, with tail wagging and ears back. He allows head to be held loosely in Assessor’s cupped hands. Sensitivity: 1. Dog leans into the Assessor, eyes soft or squinty, soft and loose body, open mouth, slight whine. Tag: 2. Dog is not fearful, but is unresponsive to the Assessor, and approaches the Assessor at the end of the game with coaxing. He is focused on stimuli other than the Assessor. Squeeze / 2: 1. 02/02/2016 GROUP BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – EXPERIENCE
Exam Type GROUP BEHAVIOR
When off leash with other dogs, Bentley is tense with a high tail during greeting. He interacts politely with the helper dog–sniffing while exploring the yard. The two often stand near each other without concern, but at one point the helper dog turns to walk past and Bentley escalates without provocation. He begins snapping at her mouth and only ceases when handler correction is offered. Once his leash is taken to lead him out of the pen he pulls toward the other dog, growling with a stiff body. His owner does not cite any interactions with other dogs but does say Bentley “gets very excited when he sees other dogs.” Based on the behaviors seen in the care center, the behavior department recommends that Bentley does not go to a home with other dogs until these behaviors can be followed up on.
