Other notes: SAFER ASSESSMENT: 04/30/17 Summary: Benson has allowed some handling in the care center but he is tense and avoids interaction with his new caretakers, in line with his owner’s report of Benson’s behavior around strangers. He watches and tracks the humans around him carefully at all times. Due to the behaviors observed, and out of concern for his stress level, we do not feel it is appropriate to perform a handling assessment at this time. Please review the full owner surrender profile for information on Benson’s behavior in his previous home as a guideline. DOG-DOG INTERACTION ASSESSMENT: Summary PLAYGROUP: When off leash with dogs at the Care Center, Benson displays nervous body language when greeting male and female dogs. He may mount the male and female dogs but responds well to handler interruptions and explores the pen. According to Benson’s previous guardian, Benson has never spent time around other dogs. The Behavior Department recommends that Benson be placed with resident dogs that match his calm sociability. MEDICAL BEHAVIOR: 04/27/17 During his initial medical examination, Benson was tense and tolerated minimal handling. ENERGY LEVEL: 4/27/17 Benson displayed a high energy. He allowed handling during his initial exam.
RECOMMENDATIONS: New Hope Only _X_No children (under 13) _X_Place with a New Hope partner: Due to the fear/avoidance behavior displayed in the care center, we cannot fully evaluate Benson and feel that he will be best set up to succeed through placement with a New Hope partner. We recommend only positive reinforcement-based, force-free training for Benson as aversive methods are likely to heighten his fear and increase aggression. Potential challenges: _X_Resource guarding _X_Handling/touch sensitivity: Benson has been noted to become uncomfortable with handling at times, especially when a person is reaching over him. It is important to always go slow and give Benson the option to walk away from any social interaction. Benson should never be forced to approach anything that he is uncomfortable with or to submit to petting or handling. It should always be Benson’s choice to approach a new person or thing. Benson would do best in an initially calm and quiet home environment and should be given time to acclimate to his new surroundings. _X_Fearful/potential for defensive aggression: Benson is extremely nervous around strangers and can be difficult to handle. He has no bite history but shows clear signs of discomfort. It is important to respect those signs and to help Benson gain comfort and confidence in order to avoid escalation.
