07/05/2016 WEB MEMO
A volunteer writes: Elton John sang Benny and the Jets and did a far better job of it than I did when serenading our Benny! Our slate gray little guy is likely housetrained, peeing enough as soon as we were outside to raise the Hudson River by 5 inches! I could almost hear him saying, ‘whew, I needed that!’. Mr. Benny pulls on the leash so will benefit from a harness and/or some leash training, and after a short walk we head into the backyard to play off leash. A master at tug, I let him win each time! Benny is a bit too thin in my opinion, but still takes treats very gently and will sit from time to time with some coaxing. His gorgeous face makes soft eye contact, he loves making friends, and when playtime was done he was happy snuggling in my lap for some kisses and leaning into me while I was making some notes. Playful with a lively energy, he loves toys, treats, cuddling and not necessarily in that order. He needs a new mommy and/or daddy to fatten him up a bit, a toy box full of toys and lots of love. Don’t make him wait too long to meet you.
08/14/2016 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – EXPERIENCE
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
Benny came into our center after the police found him tied to a fence. He was relaxed with soft body and wagging tail during intake, allowed all handling. He was friendly upon entering SAFER assessment room. He held gaze during Look item, relaxed. Benny leaned into assessor during Sensitivity item, ears back, tail wag, mouth open. He followed at the end of the leash, began grabbing and tugging the leash, requiring a reset out of the room twice, at times vocalizing. Benny pulled back on both Squeeze attempts. He showed minimal interest in Toy. When off leash with other dogs, Benny engages in rough, running play with females. The Behavior Team feels Benny would do well with an Experienced adopter. He may benefit from obedience classes to learn leash manners and focus. Benny may do well with a female resident dog, will require an interaction before considering. Look: 1. Dog holds gaze with soft eyes, soft body. He allows head to be held loosely in Assessor’s cupped hands. Dog holds gaze for three full seconds. Sensitivity: 1. Dog leans into the Assessor, eyes soft or squinty, soft and loose body, open mouth. Tag: 3. Dog follows at the end of the leash, grabs and tugs leash, does not settle, requires two resets out of the room, at times vocalizes. Squeeze 1 / 2: 2. Dog pulls back paw Toy: 1. Minimal interest in Toy, dog sniffs, then turns away. Dog-dog: When off leash with other dogs, Benny engages in rough, running play with females.
07/05/2016 GROUP BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – EXPERIENCE
Exam Type GROUP BEHAVIOR
Benny has displayed most interest in engaging in play with female dogs, and has not appeared completely comfortable whilst interacting with males. The behavior deparment feels that Benny should require a pre-adoption interaction and slow introductions with male dogs, and may be most comfortable with a playful female dog. He arrived as a stray, so it is not certain how his behavior around dogs could translate outside the care center. 7/5: When off leash with other dogs, Benny greets and sniffs with a wiggly body. He is concentrated on sniffing the rear, but takes correction. 7/6: Benny engages in running chase play with female dogs. He greets a calm male dog politely, albeit cautious. 7/7: Benny is playful and solicitous. When greeted by a tense dog, he becomes tense as well. 7/8 update: Benny engages in a bit of soft play with a group of females but is respectful when they do not engage. He may also mount but takes correction. 7/9 update: Benny engages in bouncy play, often mimicking the playstyles of the dogs he is interacting with. 7/10: Benny enages in bouts of play with other dogs. 7/11, 12: Benny greets politely, and continues to engage in bouts of play. 7/13: Benny is playful with female dogs and respectful of calm dogs. He tenses and growls at a male dog in the adjacent pen. 7/14: Benny mimics the play style of his playmates. 7/15 update: Benny solicits the other dogs to chase him through the yard. He is tolerant of wrestling play but will not engage. 7/16 update: Benny engages in rough, running play with a group of females. He will bark and growl at males in an adjacent pen. 7/18: Benny engages in play with female dogs. At times, he attempts to mount when play slows down. 7/19-7/21: Benny displays this behavior again today. 7/24-7/30 update: Benny engages in rough play with a group of females. He will mount but responds well to correction. 7/31-8/6 update: Benny continues to engage in rough, running play with females. He may attempt to mount but responds well to correction. 8/7-8/16 update: Benny continues to exhibit these behaviors when off leash with other dogs.
