07/18/16 22:24 Upon arrival Benji sat still in crate, he did not bark he remained calm. When trying to take Benji out of the crate he was very nervous and struggled alittle with the leash around his neck. Although nervous Benji did not bark or try to bite he just pulled at the leash. When bringing Benji to the back for exam he followed , remained calm and waited for intake but was still nervous.
07/24/2016 WEB MEMO
A volunteer writes: Benji, the big red dog was quite a scared mouse when he arrived at the care center. All that is history and he can now be seen trotting happily with his volunteers around the block or in the park. Let him free in a pen and he will show you his healthy energy and his enthusiasm for the ball..He leaps through the yard, his ears are flying and his eyes sparkle. He is so excited…and happy. Nothing is left from the wary dog I met on his first day…He can jump very high for a toy or a treat but can sit quite nicely too on command. He was not too keen about hopping into the pool to retrieve balls but so are lots of other pooches. Benji is gorgeous, all rust in color but not in action. He is fine with his peers in playgroups. He might have been found as a stray but he has been so well cared for and is one handsome dog who could be a cross between a Pitie, a Shepie and a Lab..Benji is quite a catch, a beautiful dog, sociable, friendly and playful. He will make a wonderful companion for an active owner or family. Come and meet him soon at the Manhattan Care Center and make him your forever best friend…
07/20/2016 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – EXPERIENCE
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
Benji came into our center as a stray so behaviors in the home are unknown. He was nervous yet calm upon intake. Benji walked with his head low, cautious and alert for his relief walk. He allowed his head to be cupped in assessor’s hands during Look item, slight lip lick. Benji stood still and accepted the touch during Sensitivity item, mouth open, slight lip lick at end of item. He followed at the end of the leash for Tag game, unresponsive to each tough, body soft. Benji quickly pulled his paw back on both Squeeze attempts. He showed minimal interest in Toy, sniffing a few times before turning away. When off leash with other dogs, Benji keeps his head low and avoids interaction. The Behavior Team feels Benji would do best with an Experienced adopter that does not have young children. He will benefit from a slow approach/slow introduction, preferably in the yard as he appears most relaxed outdoors in a new environment. Benji would benefit from initially entering a calm, quiet, structured environment so he can relax and know what to expect, warming up at his own pace. Look: 2. Dog’s eyes are averted, slight lip lick, mouth open. He allows head to be held loosely in Assessor’s cupped hands. Sensitivity: 2. Dog stands still and accepts the touch, his eyes are averted, mouth open, slight lip lick. Tag: 1. Follows at end of leash, body soft, unresponsive to touch. Squeeze 1 / 2: 2. Dog quickly pulls back paw. Toy: 1. Minimal interest in Toy, sniffs, then turns away. Dog-dog: When off leash with other dogs, Benji keeps his head low and avoids interaction.
07/20/2016 GROUP BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – EXPERIENCE
Exam Type GROUP BEHAVIOR
Benji takes time to warm up around unfamiliar dogs, however has begun to show interest in greeting and eventually soft play. The behavior team feels that Benji should require a pre-adoption interaction and slow, positive introductions to allow him time to become comfortable around a respectful resident dog. He arrived as a stray, so it is unknown how his behavior around dogs will translate into a home. 7/20: When off leash with other dogs, Benji is nervous with low, fearful body language. He tucks away when approached by the female helper dog. 7/21: Benji is relaxed when greeting, and engages in soft play. When the play becomes more exuberant, he stops engaging. 7/22 update: Benji greets politely then offers correction when solicited. 7/25: Benji allows polite greeting, mostly keeps to himself.
