01/13/2016 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – EXPERIENCE
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
Benji came in as a stray, so his past behaviors in a home are unknown. While in the client care Benji has been around children ages 2, 3 and 9 years old. At intake it was reported Benji was friendly and allowed all handling. During SAFER Benji came into the assessment room calm and relaxed, he was friendly and social towards the assessor, allowed all handling items to be conducted without issue. Benji joins the game during the tag interaction, and during the resources portion of the assessment Benji was easy to handle when engaged with the item. When off leash with other dogs, Benji greets with a tense body and assertive posture. Due to his posturing, the handler held onto the leash but kept it loose in order to control him if necessary. Once the gate opened he rushed in directly at the helper dog who had moved away to avoid him. Benji snapped at the back of the helper dog’s neck and attempted to mount however the handler was able to pull him back to the other pen. Benji was not muzzled and tried again due to the sensitivity of today’s helper dog.Due to some concerns on dog to dog interaction the behavior deaprtment feels he can be suitable for an experience adopter and a thorough dog to dog interaction before place into a Permanent home. Look: 1. Dog’s eyes are averted. His ears are back, his tail is down, and he has a relaxed body posture. Dog allows head to be held loosely in Assessor’s cupped hands. Sensitivity: 1. Dog leans into the Assessor, eyes soft, soft and loose body, open mouth. Tag: 1. Dog assumes play position and joins the game. Or dog indicates play with huffing, soft ‘popping’ of the body, etc. Dog jumps on Assessor once play begins. Squeeze 1: 1. Dog gently pulls back his paw. Squeeze 2: 1. 01/12/2016 GROUP BEHAVIOR EVALUATION
Exam Type GROUP BEHAVIOR
When off leash with other dogs, Benji greets with a tense body and assertive posture. Due to his posturing, the handler held onto the leash but kept it loose in order to control him if necessary. Once the gate opened he rushed in directly at the helper dog who had moved away to avoid him. Benji snapped at the back of the helper dog’s neck and attempted to mount however the handler was able to pull him back to the other pen. Benji was not muzzled and will be tried again due to the sensitivity of today’s helper dog. He will be re-tried tomorrow. 1/20 update: Benji was muzzled today but was incredibly stressed once it was placed on him and he ended up tearing it off his face and breaking the muzzle. We feel that there is no safe way to assess his off leash behavior with other dogs.
